Oct. 14 will be a celebration of Flyer sports. The Women's Volleyball team will take on the Duquesne Dukes at 6 p.m. from the Frericks Center. Meanwhile, the women's soccer team will face off against Richmond at 7:30 p.m. This tremendous day of UD athletics will be capped off with Flyer Madness beginning at 9:30 p.m. at Frericks. Fans attending are encouraged to dress up for the event as there will be a 70's theme.
The Flyer madness 'disco ball' will feature the introduction of both men's and women's basketball teams. Men's coach Brian Gregory as well as women's coach Jim Jabir are expected to address the Flyer faithful. The 2005 UD basketball teams are both expected to field very competitive teams.
The men's squad is hoping to make an appearance in post season play this year. The young team that took the court in 2004 now has a year of experience under its belt, as well as the confidence that they can play with the best of the Atlantic-10. They will be tested early with non-conference play against, most notably, Cincinnati and DePaul. Before beginning conference play, UD will travel west for the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Playing in Sin City will help the Flyers gain valuable experience playing away from UD Arena.
The women's basketball team improved their record by 9 wins last season. They hope to continue the success this year. Third year coach Jim Jabir must hope this summer's tour of games in Europe helped develop the youthful Flyers instincts on the court. They will be challenged, taking on six teams which appeared in tournament play last season.
Also entertaining fans will be the women's team taking part in a three-point shooting contest as well as the men's team challenging each other in a slam dunk contest.
Besides seeing the Flyers for the first time, Flyer madness will give students an opportunity to purchase tickets for the first time. Ticket vouchers will be sold and tickets distributed at a later date.
