Flyer News Editorial: All UD sports teams should be supported, they deserve it
Bookmark and Share
UD has many sports organizations, some being far more popular with students than others.

The most well known sport at UD is men's basketball. This was again shown to be true on Friday during 'Flyer Madness' when an estimated crowd of 2,700 people attended this pep rally event in Frericks Center. That attendance figure is one that most sports teams here at UD would be overjoyed to have at any game all season.

This should no longer be the case.

This tremendous support should not exclusively be shown to the men's basketball team. You, the UD community, need to get out and support all Flyer athletics. Whether it be soccer, volleyball or football, men's or women's, all teams deserve recognition and support for their hard work and dedication to their school.

As many teams begin to wind down their seasons, it is so important for them to receive this moral support from friends and fans at home games here at UD. The women's volleyball team recently experienced this support first hand.

With a total of 1,063 people in attendance, the team went on to beat Duquesne 3-1 and advance their record to 12-9 and 5-1 in the A-10 conference. This kind of support for teams not only helps the players succeed, it harvests a greater sense of community. UD is always trying to improve its already strong sense of community, so an increase in attendance in the future would come as no surprise.

Sports can bring a school together like very few other things can. However, you have to give it that opportunity.

So get out to Welcome Stadium, Baujan Field, Frericks Center and every place in between. Cheer the Flyers on to victory and be sure to bring your friends. The teams will greatly appreciate it.
