It was a showdown of the top two teams in NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major football, and No. 2 San Diego knocked off top-ranked UD in impressive fashion, 48-24 Saturday at Welcome Stadium.

The Flyers battled to a four-point halftime lead, but the Toreros outscored UD 28-0 in the second half. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kevin Hoyng rushed for one touchdown and threw for another to lead UD.

'We knew we'd have our hands full today,' San Diego head coach Jim Harbaugh said. 'We'll enjoy this victory. This is a great victory for us.'

On UD's opening drive, Hoyng scrambled 50 yards for a touchdown to put the Flyers on top 7-0.

San Diego answered just 2:54 later as quarterback Josh Johnson engineered a six-play, 51-yard scoring drive. The Toreros tied the game at 7-7 when Johnson found wideout Nick Garton for a 19-yard touchdown pass.

The Flyers converted a fourth-and-goal with a one-yard touchdown run from fullback Matt Mong with 2:34 to play in the first quarter.

A trick play on their next possession paid off, as the Toreros called a flea-flicker. The play worked, and Johnson connected with Garton for a 49-yard gain. Just two plays later, redshirt freshman tailback J.T. Rogan scored from seven yards out.

Later in the second quarter, Johnson hooked up with receiver John Matthews for a 19-yard score. The extra point failed, but San Diego had scored 13 unanswered to take a 20-14 lead.

UD cut the lead to three as place-kicker Josh Heyne booted a career-long 48-yard field goal, and the Flyers retook the lead with 1:20 to play in the first half. Tight end Matt Champa hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass to put UD on top 24-20 at the half.

The start of the second half signaled the start of a whole new ball game. This time, the theme was San Diego dominance. The Toreros scored 28 second-half points and shut out the dangerous Flyers' offense.

'We've been a really good second half team,' said Harbaugh. 'We've only had seven points scored on us in the second half the entire season.'

Johnson threw a 3-yard TD pass to Rogan, and Rogan struck again in the third quarter with a 35-yard scoring run to give San Diego its biggest lead of the game at 34-24.

Johnson scored again with an 11-yard scamper on the first play of the fourth quarter. Rogan added his fourth TD when he scored from four yards out. The two-point conversion made the final score 48-24 in favor of San Diego.

In all, Rogan racked up 180 yards rushing on 30 carries in the game.

'Rogan did a tremendous job. Harbaugh said. 'Rogan ran the ball well and made people miss.' 'He was tough to bring down, and he got every yard that was out there.'

Johnson completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Johnson also rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown on the ground. His counterpart Hoyng was 11-of-24 for 152 yards and also had 15 carries for 80 yards on the day.

Tailback Tim Watson rushed for 60 yards on 11 carries, and wide receiver Ryan Wrobleski added six receptions for 90 yards for the Flyers.

Junior linebacker Brian Kelly led the UD defense with 15 tackles. John Hoppe and Jared Frank chipped in with 12 and ten tackles respectively.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 6-1 and 2-0 in the Pioneer Football League North Division.

The loss drops UD to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the PFL. The Flyers play host to Valparaiso Saturday in a PFL North game scheduled for 1:00 p.m. UD will celebrate Senior Day, and the Lt. Andy Zulli Memorial Trophy will be presented for the 50th time at halftime of that game.
