The UD football team wrapped up its 2005 season Saturday with a 41-7 victory over Butler in Indianapolis.
The Flyers finished the season with a 9-1 record, are ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major polls and came in second in the Pioneer Football League (PFL) North Division.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Kevin Hoyng racked up 201 yards of total offense and threw two touchdown passes in the game. In the process, Hoyng set UD's single-season record for total offense. He totaled 2,525 yards in 2005, besting Steve Keller's old record which was set in 1991.
Butler's first possession ended when UD cornerback Casey Klaus intercepted a pass and returned to the Flyer 28-yard-line. On the very next play, Hoyng threw deep and hooked up with receiver Ryan Wrobleski for a 72-yard touchdown pass.
The Flyers extended their lead to 20-0 at halftime with two ten-play scoring drives. Fullback Matt Mong scored from the one yard line, and tailback Greg Wimberley carried the ball nine yards for the UD touchdowns.
After the second half kickoff, the Flyers drove 70 yards on 11 plays in a drive that took 4:58 off the clock. Hoyng capped the drive when he hit his tight end Matt Champa for a four-yard TD.
Butler got on the board to make the score 27-7 later in the third quarter when Ryan Diggins threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nate Miller.
It looked as though the Bulldogs would get back into the game when they recovered an onside kick. But Claus killed any momentum Butler had built as he picked off his second pass of the game. This time, he returned it 71 yards to the house.
Backup QB, Zulli trophy winner, Robert Dence finished the day with a one-yard touchdown run that put the Flyers on top 41-7.
Wrobleski finished the day with six receptions for 129 yards to lead UD. Senior co-captain Steve Verhoff led the Flyers in rushing with 55 yards on ten carries.
Mong added 48 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Mong led UD in scoring in 2005, scoring 12 touchdowns this season, and he finishes his career having never carried the ball for a loss in 104 career attempts.
Verhoff's co-captains John Hoppe and Ryan Winner played their last game as a Flyer as well. Hoppe led both teams in tackles with 11 on the day, and Winner started his 31st consecutive game on the offensive line.
UD forced three Butler turnovers in the game. Along with Claus's two interceptions, safety Brandon Cramer recovered a fumble.
2005 comes to a close for the Flyers having compiled a 9-1 record. Not only was it the 100th year of Dayton football, but this season also marked the 18th time in school history that the Flyers finished with one loss or less.
