The Flyer basketball regular season kickoff is right around the corner, but there is another basketball event to talk about before getting excited about the Red and Blue.

A three-on-three basketball tournament is taking place on campus this Sunday and all proceeds will benefit the Dayton Area Foodbank.

For just $15 , teams can play for prizes and support the Dayton Area Foodbank. This event is being held Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. in the PAC Gym. A raffle will also be held throughout the tournament.

Under the guidance of Dr. Mihlaea Vorvoreanu, students Nicole Herr, Kristen Nutini, Cat Cameron, Jill Burt and Shelby Quinlivan came up with the idea to host a three-on-three basketball tournament. Nicole Herr has been involved with three-on-three basketball tournaments before and mentioned the idea while brainstorming for fundraising ideas.

'As part of our CMM 461 Public Relations Campaign class, we were given the Dayton Foodbank as a non-profit organization to work with,' Quinlivan said. 'After meeting with Velvette Hux, the coordinator of the Dayton Foodbank, we found that there was a need for monetary donations.'

The tournament has no sponsor and is being done without any start-up money. The group has received plenty of donations from local business. These donations are for raffle prizes.

'Our big raffles are the Dayton to Daytona ticket we have to give away, along with the four Dayton basketball tickets that are Dr. Curran's personal seats,' Quinlivan said. 'A Starbucks gift basket, tanning packages, Art Street Caf?? gift certificates, UD bookstore gift cards and more will be given away.'

Teams will be divided into brackets and each team is guaranteed two games of play. Along with the college students, area Dayton children ages 7-15 will also be participating. The children will be split into age brackets separated by boys and girls and the college students will be competing in male or female brackets.

Prizes will be given to winning teams and many other certificates and gift cards will be given away as part of the raffle.

When buying wholesale food, the Dayton Foodbank is able to stretch each dollar donated six times its amount. This food goes out to reach those people in need. Help put an end to hunger in the Dayton Area and take advantage of the chance to win some great prizes.

Look for a table in KU at lunch this week to sign up. The table will be attended from 11-2 p.m. every day. Registration can be returned to the table in KU or in the Communications Department Office, SJ 121.
