The University of Dayton women's basketball team continues to impress as conference play gets underway.
The Flyers won their 10th game of the season on Sunday against conference newcomer Saint Louis. The now 10-4 Flyers scored 95 points to beat the Bilikens by 24. The game also marked the most points scored by any team in the Atlantic 10 conference this season and the first time the Flyers have scored 95 points in a game since February 20, 2000 when UD beat St. Bonaventure in regular-season conference play.
The game against Saint Louis also showed the strength of the Flyers as all 12 dressed players came off the bench to score and aid in the win. The team was led by three players, all contributing 13 points each: juniors Jenny Strong and Amber Peterink and sophomore Ashley Armstrong. Senior Terry Ramsey and sophomore Brittany Holterman led all players with five assists each.
The win against Saint Louis puts the Flyers, who are 2-1 in the A-10, in good position as conference games continue over the next week.
On Friday the Flyers will travel to Pittsburgh to play Duquesne at the A.J. Palumbo Center. The Dukes (6-8) are coming off a 72-53 loss to Richmond on Sunday. The loss puts Duquesne at 1-2 in conference games.
Duquesne won in Pittsburgh last year by a close score of 59-51, but lost earlier in the season to the Flyers at UD Arena in an even closer 55-54. Both teams finished their 2004-2005 seasons with first-round losses in the conference tounrament. Duquesne has lost high scorers Aiga Bautre and Maria Stankevich to graduation as UD returns all but Emily Williams from its starting five last year.
The first match-up of 2006 between Duquesne and Dayton will start at 7 p.m. Friday Jan. 13.
After the road trip to Pennsylvania, the Flyers return home to take on Richmond on Sunday. The Spiders most recently earned a win at home and have 7-8 overall and 2-1 conference records.
Both UD and Richmond have defeated Saint Louis, with the Spiders taking the Bilikens 71-65.
Senior Cara Wright leads the Flyers in overall scoring with 13.9 ppg and Richmond is lead by Chapman and sophomore Mirna Mazic, who have each averaged 9.6 ppg.
In the last meeting between Richmond and UD, the Flyers lost in the regular season closer in a heartbreaking 76-77 game. Current senior Araceli Gil won the game for Richmond after being fouled and scoring both her free throws with less than eight seconds left on the clock. In that game, graduated senior Emily Williams lead both teams with 29 points as Wright was second overall with 22. Chapman was the leading scorer for Richmond with 21.
The string of conference games continues for the Flyers as they stay home to take on rival Xavier on Jan. 17. The 1-2 musketeers are coming off an extremely close 68-66 loss at Rhode Island
The meeting between UD and Xavier will be a match up of A-10 honorees. Wright has been recognized four times by the conference for her play this season garnering four A-10 player of the week awards. XU has, on its roster, senior Tara Botthe. Boothe also earned accolades for her play against Saint Louis and Charlotte, against whom she put up 35 points in an XU loss.
Last year Xavier finished the season in the A-10 semifinals, when the musketeers lost to the top-seeded Temple. In the last meeting between UD and XU, Xavier beat the Flyers 73-54 in Cincinnati.
With a string of 13 conference games left on the schedule for the Flyers before the A-10 tournament begins, the upcoming three games are sure to make for some exciting play.
