Temple's Mardy Collins banked in a double-pump shot in the lane with 0.9 seconds remaining to lift the Owls past the Dayton Flyers 53-51 Wednesday at UD Arena.
For the Flyers, it was their seventh consecutive loss, the team's longest losing streak since the 1994-95 season.
'This one is tough, because they played their hearts out. They played hard' UD head coach Brian Gregory said
With 3:15 remaining, Antywane Robinson hit a three-pointer that gave Temple a 46-43 lead. UD's Monty Scott answered with a three of his own, which brought the crowd to its feet and tied the game at 46. But Robinson, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half, hit yet another trey. Dustin Salisbery added a free throw with 35.9 seconds left to give TU a 50-46 lead.
Brian Roberts almost single-handedly kept UD alive late in the game. He cut the deficit to 50-48 with a short jumper in the lane, and the Flyers quickly fouled.
With 25.6 to play, Collins went 1-of-2 from the line to put the Owls ahead by three. With time winding down, Roberts buried a deep triple to tie the score.
Temple got the ball back with 13.1 seconds left and ran a play for Collins to hit the game-winner.
'I'm not pleased with how the game ended,' said Gregory. 'We just tried to force [Collins] into a difficult shot, [but] he hit the runner.'
Collins'an All-American candidate'and Salisbery led the Owls with 16 points apiece, and Robinson added 12 in the game. Salisbery chipped in seven rebounds and Collins had a team-high four assists.
For the Flyers, Scott led the way with 16 points, and Roberts contributed 14 points, five boards and five assists. Norman Plummer scored 10 points and led UD with eight rebounds.
'I was pleased to see Monty back out there,' Gregory said. 'He played well and did some good things for us.'
The Owls held an early 4-3 lead before five straight points from Scott gave UD a four-point edge. First, Chris Alvarez stole the ball and hit a wide open Scott in the lane for a crowd-pleasing dunk. On the next Flyers possession, Scott hit a three-pointer with 15:29 to play in the first half.
At the 12:25 mark, Salisbery buried a trey to bring the Owls within a point at 10-9.
Norman Plummer hit a baseline jumper with 3:29 left to give UD a 19-17 lead, but Temple ended the half on a 7-2 run to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room.
Temple extended its lead early in the second half. Collins stole a UD pass and finished with a jam at the other end. The Owls led 29-24, and Gregory was forced to take a timeout.
The Flyers answered, however, with a 5-0 run to tie the game. Scott hit a three-pointer, and Marques Bennett grabbed a long rebound and went coast-to-coast for the lay-in.
A pair of shots from beyond the arc from Robinson gave the Owls their largest lead of the game. The second three-pointer came at 9:39 to put Temple up 37-30.
UD hit two threes of its own sandwiched around a Temple free throw to get the Flyers back into the game. Bennett hit from the corner and, with 8:17 left on the clock, Plummer knocked one down to bring the Flyers within two.
The Flyers drew even when Roberts stole the ball and took it all the way to the other end for two. That basket evened the score at 43 and set the stage for an intense final three minutes.
Temple shot just 50 percent from the free throw line, but the Owls grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and forced 17 Dayton turnovers.
The Flyers shot the ball well, connecting on 47 percent of their field goals and hitting 8-of-16 three-pointers but still came up short in the end.
The loss drops UD to 0-4 in Atlantic 10 play and 8-10 overall. Temple improves to 9-6 and 3-2 in the conference.
The Flyers are back in action Saturday at the UD Arena as they will play host to the Duquesne Dukes.
