UD police officers are still searching for the person(s) responsible for setting off several homemade bombs in the Ghetto last Friday evening.
Four bombs, made from plastic pop bottles and 'common home ingredients,' were placed along the 300 block of Kiefaber Street at approximately 10:20 p.m., according to public safety chief of operations Larry Dickey.
Three of the devices exploded; a fourth, found 'slowly swelling' on the porch of 330 Kiefaber St., was neutralized when a Dayton Police Department Bomb Squad member shot it with a pellet rifle, according to the incident report.
The bombs contained no projectiles and injured no one, although splashed chemicals caused some damage to the hood of a car.
Brother Tom Pieper, who lives in the Marianist house at 301 Kiefaber, was downstairs when he heard one of the bombs explode.
'It sounded like a firecracker,' he said. Pieper didn't realize what had happened until he went upstairs a few minutes later and saw police in the street. He saw no signs of the devices.
According to Pieper, this has never happened before and will hopefully remain an isolated incident.
'I'm hoping that people don't start picking that up as an idea,' he said.
Police believe the bombs were meant to be a prank rather than harmful, although they still could have injured someone standing close by. However, according to Dickey, 'anyone apprehended who for this will be treated accordingly,' which includes disciplinary sanctions and criminal prosecution.
Dickey said no suspects have been identified, although one witness saw an unidentified male deposit the bottles before leaving in a dark-colored car. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Public Safety at 229-2121. Dickey also advised those who see suspicious objects on campus to stay away from them and call Public Safety as well.
