Ramsey is key for Flyers' success

The University of Dayton women's basketball team is right in the middle of a great season. After only losing one senior last year, the seniors currently on the 2005-2006 roster will be looked to for their experience and drive during their last months in a Flyer uniform.

The women's basketball team has four seniors on its roster this season. Of the four seniors, one already has the experience of a national tournament under her belt.

Though only in her second season as a Flyer, senior Terri Ramsey has already been exposed to the competitive championship setting. As a sophomore at Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, Ramsey led her team to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division Two Championships, where the Scottsdale Artichokes claimed the runner up spot.

In the NJCAA tournament, Ramsey averaged 19 points and five assists per game. She was named the regional tournament MVP and also given a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Her last game as an Artichoke turned out to be the most influential in her basketball career. Choosing a school late into her sophomore and final year at Scottsdale, Ramsey was scouted heavily at the NJCAA tournament.

'Picking a school for me was a bit difficult, because it was late in the signing period; I signed April of my sophomore year' said Ramsey. 'Since it was so late schools were trying to pressure me to sign without even visiting.'

However, Ramsey was able to make two very important college visits. After looking at division II school Southern Missouri, Ramsey made her visit to Dayton. The visit to the school was all the 5-5 guard from Tacoma, Washington needed as she knew UD would be the right place for her.

'I was supposed to go on visits to Indiana State, Southern in Baton Rouge, St. John's and another DII school in Indiana, but when I came and visited Dayton I really liked the community, coaches and facilities so I committed and cancelled the rest of the visits,' she said.

Coming into a new school can be hard for anyone, not to mention transferring in as a sophomore to a place far from home. However, Ramsey was able to make a great adjustment and immediately contribute to the team.

In just her first season as a Flyer Ramsey started in all but one of the 28 games that year, enabling her to lead the team in assists with 81. Ramsey scored her season high of 14 points in a conference win against Duquesne, where she was able to score 12 of her points in the second half to bring the Flyers back from a 23 point deficit to win 55-54.

In the 2005-2006 season, Ramsey has continued to shine as the Flyers are currently fourth overall in conference standings. So far in her senior season, Ramsey has played in all 21 games and has contributed to the Flyers ranking as second in the A-10 in assists, with her spot as fifth in the conference with 81 this season. She is also fourth in the A-10 in the assist-turnover ratio rankings, with 53 turnovers for the season and a 1.53 ratio between the two. Most recently, Ramsey impressed in the Flyers home game against Saint Bonaventure, grabbing a career-high eight rebounds in the Flyers 66-63 win.

Ramsey's skill over the past two years has allowed her to be seen as a strong player by her teammates and also an individual who knows what she is doing on the court,

'On the court Terri is our floor-leader' sophomore Kiki Lund. 'Being the point guard she is responsible for setting up our offensive and making sure we stick together as a team.'

Lund also added, 'Terri is an excellent point guard. She has a great handle and is good at pushing the ball up the floor. She always sets the tempo and is good at distributing the ball. She can be very intense and is not fond of losing ' she always gives us that extra spark when we need it.'

Ramsey credits her teammates as a big reason for her easy adjustment to life at UD.

'They are truly my first family in Dayton. It's like I have 11 sisters,' she said.

With the family-like atmosphere of the women's basketball team it should be no surprise as to how great the season is going for the Flyers and Ramsey. After finishing the 2004-2005 season with a 6-10 conference record, the women have already won seven conference games with six still left in the season. After losing to Fordham in the first round of the A-10 tournament last year, Ramsey and her teammates have their sites set on improving the post-season record.

'My team goal and senior goal is to go post-season and to continue playing as well as we are,' Ramsey said.

With the continued improvement and drive of Ramsey and all her teammates, it will be exciting to see how the rest of the women's basketball season progresses.

Up next for the Flyers is a road trip to the Philadelphia to play LaSalle today. The A-10 tournament begins on March 3.
