One sports team at the University of Dayton is about to finish out one season and then quickly begin another.

The UD women's track and field team is wrapping up the indoor competition this weekend and will look forward to the outdoor season.

After competing in six indoor meets, the Flyers have traveled through Ohio and Kentucky.

The track and field team began at the Oiler Opener at Findlay. There, the team was able to see where their hard training in the fall had placed them before the long winter break. The meet was the first for the team under the guidance of new head coach Kandice Erwin.

'The first meet of the season stands out in my mind as one of my favorite memories of the season,' said Erwin. 'We competed at the University of Findlay back in December, which gave us our first chance to see the team in action and see how the fall training went.'

Upon returning to campus in January, the Flyers had many more opportunities to display the hard work they had put in for months.

First the Flyers impressed at Ball State, with some garnering personal and seasonal bests. Freshman Amy Kremer started her impressive run of high jump accomplishments as she broke the school record, jumping 5-6 1/4. Sophomore Megan Sweeney also tied her personal best with a height of 5-6 1/4. Junior Tara Hentgen earned a new personal best as she sailed to 35-7 1/4 in the triple jump.

The Flyers then traveled to Bowling Green for the first team scored meet of the season against Ball State, BGSU, Xavier, Cincinnati and IPFW. Junior Dianne Streibel started the meet strong for the Flyers, finishing fifth in the 5000 meter run in 18:45.33. As the meet went on, the Flyers earned three gold medals from senior Kelly Pohlman and junior Liz Forster. Pohlman earned first place in the shot put and weight throw with distances of 45-4 1/4 and 56-6 in her respective events. Forster claimed first in the 600 meter run, finishing in 1:40.60. Thanks to the help of theses three athletes and the rest of the team, the Flyers came together to place fourth as a team.

The middle of the season included trips to Lexington, Ky. for the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet and to Cedarville University for the school's home invitational. In Lexington, sophomore Connie Fleming earned a personal best in the weight throw, throwing 42-11 1/2. Sweeney, senior Stacia Harold and freshman Kylene Guerra all earned season bests in the 200 meter run. Other season bests were earned in the 400 meter run, the 800 meter run and the 3000 meter run.

At Cedarville, the Flyers had a chance to compete close to home and took advantage. Kremer again grabbed a personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-7 3/4 and establishing a school and Cedarville Field House record. The 4X800 meter relay team of Striebel, Ellen Nienhaus, Anne Oltman and Syd Hubbard claimed first with a time of 10:07.57. Along with Kremer and the relay team, freshman Lisa Aubry, Fleming and junior Amanda Tucker also earned season bests helping the team to second place.

Most recently, the Flyers competed in the All-Ohio Championships as a tune-up for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships on Feb. 18. Harold, Kremer, Sweeney, Pohlman, and the 4X400 and distance medley relay teams all helped in the Flyers earning 29.33 points for the day.

With the last meet of the regular season completed, Coach Erwin was very excited with how the team continued through the winter months.

'I am very pleased with how our indoor season turned out' Erwin said. 'Coming in as a new coach, I was hoping for a smooth transition implementing team goals and expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised with how the team responded to the change.'

The team has also continued to improve, making the near and far future seem bright for the Flyers.

The Flyers will now prepare to travel to Kingston, RI to take on the best in the A-10. With the focus now on specific aspects of the events, the Flyers are hoping to improve on last years finish and be among the top five indoor track teams in the conference.
