Flyer News Editorial: Recycling at UD needs to be taken more seriously by all
Bookmark and Share
Today the final segment of three in a special recycling series appears on the front page of Flyer News.

We at Flyer News believe so strongly in this cause we decided to dedicate three issues to it.

Having all the students involved in recycling is a major goal of the movement. Currently, the majority of recycling that gets done on campus is in academic buildings, with the recycling of paper and cardboard.

The residence halls, however, are beginning to catch on, as well. The ratio of trash to recyclable is about three to one, which shows a positive trend toward a less wasteful student body.

As these students become more used to the habit of recycling and more comfortable with the idea, they will carry it with them throughout the rest of their time spent at UD and hopefully into their lives after college.

UD needs to become cognizant of the fact that we as a school produce huge amounts of waste and that recycling does not require all that much effort. These two truths, huge waste production and relative ease of recycling, go hand in hand. If most people realized these two points, they would most likely recycle more than they do now.

One major reason people and places are often hesitant to change is because they feel the new way of doing things might be more difficult.

This particular situation is far too important to let petty fears of discomfort get in the way of productive change.

Signs of change are becoming more apparent, with organizations like the Sustainability Club growing in popularity and UD is finally beginning to take recycling more seriously. These positive trends toward more eco-friendly living not only bode well for campus life but for the greater global community.

Hopefully, by the time those students that are freshman now graduate from UD in 2009 this school will be a nationwide leader in recycling.
