Flyer News Editorial: Response to DDN editorial by Bill O'Reilly is counterproductive
Bookmark and Share
The right to due process of law is one that is fundamental to the very fabric that makes up America. It ensures that justice will prevail over flavor-of-the-week issue lobbying and it helps prevent political witch hunts.

That's why we here at Flyer News were greatly concerned when Fox News political pundit Bill O'Reilly deemed the Dayton Daily News "friendly to child rapists" after the paper called for due process of law, rather than a reactionary witch hunt, when dealing with Ohio Judge John Connor's sentence of probation given to a convicted child molester.

O'Reilly is certainly no stranger to making irrelevant, unfounded accusations. However, as a repeated and supposed supporter of a strict interpretation of the U.S. constitution, Flyer News believes he should realize how following established laws contributes to keeping a society orderly and just.

Rather than calling for Connor's impeachment, O'Reilly should have investigated the situation further to discover the most accurate way of handling it according to the law. Rather than making degrading comments about Connor, O'Reilly could have furthered his support for Ohio Attorney General Jim Petro's campaign for the state to adopt Jessica's Law, which establishes mandatory jail time for convicted child molesters. While this approach might not be as ratings-friendly, it would help to make sure the mistake never happens again.

In addition, O'Reilly's response to the Dayton Daily News editorial showed how he was more concerned with bashing anyone who disagreed with him than about truly facing and resolving political conflict. Rather than addressing the problem at hand, O'Reilly completely missed the point of the editorial and decided to sensationally call the news paper names and accuse them of supporting child molestation. While this might appeal to an audience or raise ratings, Flyer News believes it does nothing to solve actual problems; it simply serves as one more way for Bill O'Reilly to preach to his choir.
