Students help create design for landmark

Not many people can say on their resume they helped design a major landmark.

If all goes well, however, civil engineering majors Randy Worley and Sean Wade will be able to say they had a hand in helping design a monument to the Wright Brothers.

The idea for the monument, which has been the vision of the Wright Image group for ten years, was presented to UD in October. Companies like the Wright Image group contact UD wanting civil engineer students' help for their project designs, Wade said.

The projects have to be on a large scope as to cover several of the elements civil engineers learn about, but small enough to be completed in a reasonable amount of time, Worley explained.

What is this monument? The monument is an airplane similar to the one the Wright Brothers flew. According to a recent press release, the monument will be 200 feet tall and will be located at the intersection of I-70 and I-75.

Both Wade and Worley are confident that the Wright Image group will be pleased with their work. In January, a 'kick off dinner' was held to exchange both ideas and feedback. Wade said he and Worley tried to incorporate what they wanted in the plans.

The students presented their work to the Wright Image Group, UD faculty and the President on Thursday. If Wright Image accepts their plans, all the students' work goes to them.

'The ball's in their court,' Worley said.

The project is estimated to cost $6.5 million and take about a year to complete.

And, though the project may be a long way off, it still looks good on a resume.
