The University of Dayton men's lacrosse team has joined a new conference and is 3-0 in its division in 2006.

The Flyers joined the Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association (CCLA) and began their spring season on February 25.

Since then, UD has racked up a 4-2 record including a perfect mark in the B Division. The division consists of ten'primarily smaller'schools in the Midwest.

The Flyers picked up their first victory in the new league on March 10 when they defeated Taylor University 9-2. Sophomore Scott Hunsaker led UD with two goals and goalie Brian Eisenhardt made 13 saves.

The team followed that up with a 15-9 win over Carnegie Mellon on March 25. It was a high-scoring affair as the two teams combined for 21 goals in the first three quarters of play.

Senior Roy Gordon poured in five goals and attacker Chris Jehling tallied two goals and five assists.

UD remained perfect in the division on April 1 after a 12-4 beating of Calvin College. The Flyers dominated the second half of play outscoring Calvin 9-2, and Gordon scored three goals while Jehling added two goals and two assists.

Eisenhardt saved 11 of the 15 shots he faced.

The men's lacrosse team also picked up a win out of division when it beat Grand Valley 14-5. UD's only losses came against A Division squads Purdue and Oakland in the first two games of the spring season.

'It's good because there's not just one guy that any team can key on,' said junior lacrosse player and team president John Pastorek. 'Our balance this season has been unbelievable.'

There are about 30 players on the men's lacrosse roster and, according to Pastorek, the nice thing about playing a club sport is that everyone gets a chance to play. This is evidenced by the fact that 14 have scored a point for the Flyers this season.

Pastorek adds that Sports Illustrated deemed lacrosse the fastest growing sports in the United States.

'I see great potential for lacrosse to keep growing as a sport, especially in the Midwest,' said the club lacrosse president.

Pastorek also said the team hopes and expects to receive a bid to the CCLA playoffs which will be played April 28-30.

From there, the conference winner goes to the national playoffs held in Dallas.

Dedication and a stronger commitment, said Pastorek, are part of the reason that UD lacrosse has had so much recent success. The team's president also points out the addition of two new coaches, one of whom coached at Wittenberg for five years and another who played lacrosse for Navy.

On the field, it is freshman Jehling who leads the team with 20 points including 16 assists, and with 12 goals, Gordon is UD's leading scorer.

Eisenhardt, only a sophomore, has made an outstanding 73 saves against 97 shots faced. With a save percentage of greater than 75 percent, the Flyers goaltender is likely to make the all-conference team. Junior Kevin Nameth has scored just one goal but is widely regarded as the team's best defender.

'But our main goal is just to go out there and have fun,' said Pastorek.

UD looks to continue having fun when they play a divisional game today (Friday) against IUP at 8 p.m. on Stuart Field. The Flyers will hit the road to take on Cincinnati on Sunday.
