UD seems more concerned about image than safety

The administration of this school embarrassed itself this weekend by its policies and through the actions of their henchmen.

In efforts to suppress what should be a marquee event on this campus, an event for students to hang their hat on, university officials sent a clear message to the student body; we're more concerned about our image than about you.

It is not difficult to tell that students are upset over the policies of the administration. On the surface it appears students are upset because they could not have 'wild dangerous parties.' Unfortunately they are irked by much deeper issues; mainly the suppression of free will and being made felt like they are criminals.

Most students don't see anything wrong with having 30 people over to enjoy some beverages on a warm spring day. In fact, most feel entitled to that as a UD student. Now, however, that aforementioned gathering is not only illegal but would result in astronomical fines. Why?

I came to UD four years ago, and I assume many others did as well, because of its vibrant and open social scene. Not in spite of it. The current illogical new regulations and the hyper enforcement of existing regulations are choking the thing I mainly came to this university for.

I've recently noticed UD students visiting area bars more frequently. (As a side if they actually close the pub next year some entrepreneurship team is going to clean up on Dr. Dan Voodoo dolls) This fact disturbs me for a couple reasons.

First they are attending more frequently because they are either scared of the potential fines the University might levy on them if they have a party or they don't want to deal with a hassle from the UD Police. This bothers me secondly because I feel the administration is trying to rid itself of parties and pass that burden on to the local bars. To steal an analogy from my man Bill Simmons, that is like parents sending their children off to boarding school so they don't have to deal with their adolescent behavior; an egregious and self-centered action.

Sure the administration feels encouraged by their actions because 'applications are at an all time high;' clearly the most important thing and the best barometer to measure success.

I will concede they might be but that has more to do with the construction of structures such as Marianist Hall and the Rec Plex and little or nothing to do with UD being perceived less of as a 'party' school. It's like a world government waging an unpopular war but winning re-election because of a strong economy then claiming the re-election was due to support for the war. I will also add that college applications in general are at an all-time high across the nation due to the proliferation and ease of online applications.

UD is currently ranked No. 4 for 'Lots of Beer' by the Princeton Review; a statistic I am sure Dr. Dan loses sleep over. However, if the administration continues with its current policies UD might soon be ranked in another category 'Least Happy Students.' A category they truly should lose sleep over if they held our interests over their own, and not the other way around. This student is not happy.
