You won't have to look hard to see these guys on the pool deck in Daytona. After all, they will be on stage playing music in the sunshine for a sold-out Dayton to Daytona crowd. How'd they get this awesome opportunity?
It was the final round of 'Rock the Wave' and tensions were high. With three bands remaining, 'The Werks,' 'Collin and Sean' and 'The Melting Room' all had their 'A' game ready to rock the stage for the chance to play on the pool deck in Daytona.
All three bands played their best, but only one won over the full house crowd at KU Pub on Feb. 16, 'The Melting Room.' This five-member progressive funk-rock group played a handful of their best covers and originals, including songs from their new record.
'Having three contenders [in the finals] was really different since we had to divide our set in two 20 minute blocks of time instead of one full half hour set,' said Alex Rolfes, band guitarist and vocalist. 'Since we had to do this, the flow of energy in our set and the order became even more important.'
Their energy rubbed off on the crowd who danced and partied along with the band consisting of all seniors; Chris Albanese (vocals, piano, saxophone), Terry Desmond (drums), Alex Rolfes (guitar, vocals), Mike Schindler (guitar, vocals) and Pete Wamsley (bass, vocals).
Forming in Stuart Hall in 2002, the band was originally dubbed 'Walt Flanagan's Dog.' After practicing in a meeting room in Stuart Hall's basement that had the letter 'E' rubbed out of 'Meeting Room' (making it look like 'Melting Room') their name was created. Four years later, they're hitting a high point in their career playing an hour set in Daytona.
'It will definitely wrap up the last four years of us being together,' said Albanese. 'As many of us will be graduating, having all of our friends there will be a great end to the last four years.'
The band isn't quite sure yet which of their many originals and covers they're going to use to hype the crowd in Daytona. They said they'll probably decide what will be played a day before the show.
'The atmosphere is going to make it easier for us to put on a good show,' said Wamsley. 'The energy of everyone being down there with the sun and sand is going to be welcomed with open arms.'
As for what's in the future for the five seniors and the 'The Melting Room,' they plan on staying together since four of the five band members are either going to graduate school or continuing to work on their fifth year of undergrad at UD. Keep an eye out for them next year as they move on to bigger and better things as a band.
Before their performance at Dayton to Daytona, students have the opportunity to check out "The Melting Room" on campus at a few events. First, they'll be playing at the third annual M-Fest Art and Music Festival this Saturday. Also, they're playing at this year's BarnJam on April 22.
