Dance Ensemble leaps, spins and taps spring into Boll

'You can master changing [your clothes] in less than 10 seconds when you have one show after another.'

Oddly enough, senior Jennifer Jennings is right. Being an expert changer is just the kind of talents a dancer needs in order to keep up with the quick pace of constant costume changes, multiple dance numbers and frantic backstage activity at the UD Dance Ensemble's Spring Concert.

An established group at UD since the 1980's (as is apparent by the tacky 80's posters still hanging in their rehearsal halls) the UD Dance Ensemble will be performing their annual Spring Concert today and tomorrow in Boll Theater at 8 p.m. General admission is $10 and $6 for students.

Weekend practices may have taken a toll on the girls participating with rehearsals sometimes lasting up to eight hours, but junior Ashley Gayonski says it's worth it. Dancing since the age of 5, Gayonski has already participated in seven dance ensemble shows throughout high school and college. She is co-directing the Spring Concert this year alongside artistic director Mark Cummings.

The Spring Concert has something for everyone, with ballet, jazz, hip-hop and modern numbers peppering this year's show. A total of 12 numbers'instead of the usual eight'will be in the concert with a senior piece consisting of six graduating dancers closing the performance.

'It's going to be good,' said Gayonski. 'Sad, but good.'

The talent displayed in the show is expected to be quite impressive. And of course there's nothing like a hot, fun outfit to complete the spectacle.

From hot pink fishnets, angel and devil themed outfits and early 90's attire (think 'Rent' meets the Scrunchie), all costumes are devised to meet the theme of the particular number in which they are worn.

While both revolve around dance, the Dance Ensemble is not to be confused with UD Dance.

'We're different, but both are simply opportunities for dancers to incorporate dance into college without making it their lives,' said Jennings.

While the Ensemble is a club made up of serious dancers, the girls also see each other as family. And their favorite wacky tradition? Thursday nights at Tim's, even sometimes pulling out some moves from the group.

So come check out the UD Dance Ensemble's final show of the year. It's bound to make you want to tap, leap and twirl out of Boll.
