Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. That phrase can make you laugh. However, the fact that a lot of college students stress out around this time of year is no laughing matter.
This year, a PR campaigns class did something about it: D-Stress Week. Sarah Danaher, Kailyn Derck, Katie Bollin, Tom Jakacki, and Zwisel Gandia partnered with the Wellness Council and Counseling center to hold this event.
'We had a lot of help from the Wellness Council and the Counseling Center,' Danaher said. 'We could not have made this event a reality without their contributions and support.'
D-Stress Week was created to help to students unwind, Danaher said. Tuesday through Thursday, comedies were shown in the evening leading up to D-Stress Day, which was Friday. On Friday a smorgasbord of relaxing goodies were made available to students.
'The turnout was fantastic,' Danaher said. 'Students commented positively on the event, some even said there should be something like this every Friday.'
Cornhole, Frisbee golf, free stress balls, CDs, and literature on how to deal with stress were made available. It is about respecting the body and self, Derck said.
The biggest hits were free chair massages by RecPlex masseuse Rose Waggenspeck (Waggenspeck stated that many girls carry their shoulders too high) and the Humane Society animals. Erin Shiner from the Counseling Center said by petting animals, people can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The two dogs, three kittens, rabbit and guinea pig received plenty of love in return.
For those of you who missed D-stress Day or Week, there may be some hope.
'Since this was a project for our class, this was a one time event for us,' Danaher said. '[But] seeing as it was a big success, the Counseling Center and the Wellness Council expressed interest in continuing the event in the future.'
