The word Daytona brings many images to mind'free drinks, pools filled with much more than just chlorine and water, the ocean or a stress-free vacation. This year, another word can be added to the list of all things considered to be 'Daytona'' Guster.
On May 14, all those participating in Dayton to Daytona will be able to tap their toes and shake what their mama gave them to the tunes of Guster right on the Holiday Inn's pool deck. The band is scheduled to play Sunday, the last day on the pool deck in Daytona. The band will be playing for about 90 minutes right at 3 p.m., or the last call for free drinks.
For those of you who may never have heard of Guster, here's a brief history. Many years ago, back in 1991 to be exact, three young men met in the dorm hallway at Tufts University. Their names were Adam, Ryan and Brian, and over the past 15 years they have been playing together in their very own band.
This band of course is known as Guster, who play songs such as 'Amsterdam,' 'Fa Fa,' and 'Barrel of a Gun.' They currently have five albums, which, along with their songs, can all be checked out on their Web site, http://www.guster.com.
'Guster is very much a college band. They are usually friendly to the college atmosphere, and we hope that will be the same with us,' said Adam Rathge. Rathge and Brian Felter are this years Dayton to Daytona Trip Coordinators.
The two contacted a number of people to play in Daytona, such as OAR, Jason Mraz, and Matt Nathanson, but decided on Guster based on budget and equipment set-up since it will be on the pool deck this year.
'We really wanted the band on the pool deck this year to keep everything together in Daytona,' said Rathge. Since the concert is on the pool deck, it is exclusively for those students who have paid for Dayton to Daytona. So everyone must have a wristband to be present at the concert.
Other bands scheduled to play on the pool deck this year are The Melting Room and Mike Notar. The Melting Room is a five-member progressive funk-rock group from UD, who won this year's 'Rock the Wave,' beating out seven other bands for the chance to play an hour set in Daytona. They will be kicking off the live entertainment for the week on May 11, at 1 p.m. Mike Notar is a UD alum and rapper who has played with the likes of Counting Crows, Adam Duritz and guitarist David Immergluck. Notar will be performing for his second time in Daytona on May 12.
This year's Dayton to Daytona is shaping up to be the largest Daytona ever with approximately 2,400 students going. That is about 200 more people than last year, which was considered the largest Daytona until now. Students will be filling up six hotels this year.
