After reeling off four consecutive wins, the UD baseball team dropped last Wednesday's matchup with Cincinnati and looked to get back on the winning side with a weekend series against rival Xavier.
The Flyers opened the series with urgency. A bad weather system had rain in the forecast and it appeared the game could have been delayed, but the Flyers picked up a 2-0 win over the Musketeers in a rain-shortened game.
The Flyers began their offensive attack early. Second baseman Mike Massa pelted an offering by Xavier pitcher Dan Graham to centerfield for a triple. The hit extended Massa's hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. Massa crossed the plate to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead by means of a Joe McSoley sacrifice fly.
With two runners on base, catcher Will Benoit drove a single to center field, plating Bryan Chandler and giving UD a two run edge.
On the mound, Kyle Lindsay surrendered only four hits in the 5.1 innings pitched prior to the game being called due to rain. The four strikeouts helped the junior move his record to 6-0 this season.
Without head coach and mentor Tony Vittorio in the dugout for the weekend series, Luke Trubee lead the Flyers to a shutout victory and further cemented his name in UD history. The right-handed senior struck out seven Musketeers, moving into first place among Dayton pitchers in strikeouts. Trubee did not issue any walks and only one runner advanced past second base.
The top of the lineup was once again the spark for Flyer offense. Massa led off for the Flyers as he went 1-4 with a walk and continued his hitting streak. Galen Schumm, batting third, hit a home run and scored twice while reaching base three times on walks.
The Flyers completed the sweep on Sunday with a 8-5 victory over Xavier. Massa again set the table for the Flyers with a lead off double. He was left stranded on base and the first run did not come until the fourth inning.
Xavier took the lead but UD rallied in the bottom of the inning and took a 3-1 lead. The Musketeers evened the score in the top of the fifth but UD again took the lead with a home run by Massa and then continued the power surge with Galen Schumm's double to right field and then Bryan Chandler's RBI double.
Freshman southpaw Quinn Hasselhorst took the hill for the Flyers and pitched four innings allowing five hits and three runs as he struck out four Xavier batters. Chris Rubio entered the game in the fifth and provided three innings of quality relief. Picking up the win, Rubio fanned two batters and did not allow any runs. Craig Rohren entered the game in the ninth and retired two batters to pick up the save.
The Flyers next game is against Wright State on Tuesday.
