I really am not sure as to what I want to do with my life. And you know what? That is just fine. Currently, I am a Political Science major. I may change to something in business or perhaps English.
I am coming to the realization that whatever major I choose may not impact where I am in twenty years as much as I previously thought. Sure it would be nice to know exactly what I want to do, but is that exciting? No. So, I lack direction. There are worse tragedies in life. What if I never learned to read? That would have been a tragedy my friends. Anyway, people in general need to stop insulting and degrading differing majors from their own because I believe'like men'all majors are created equal.
My friends insist that my major is 'happiness.' This, clearly, isn't true. They are pre-med or a type of engineering and feel as though their majors are somehow superior. I like to return the insult. What usually goes over well is explaining that while they spend the rest of their lives as lab rats or temperature takers, I'll become the leader of the free world and cut federal funding to their professions.
Of course, all these generalities are incorrect. Hell, Bill Gates didn't even graduate from college and he's the richest dude in the world. But that is a different opinion for a different time. Look for the college-is-overrated-you-just-have-to-know-people article coming soon.
Many reasons why people choose a particular major has to do with prestige. My line is 'I'm thinking about going to law school.' It tends to impress people enough to change the subject. Law school is honestly one of my choices, but saying I would like to live on a sailboat off the coast of Thailand and write haikus usually raises an eyebrow or two. Telling people you are pre-med is more impressive than saying you are undecided arts. It just is. I'm in the school of arts and sciences, it's all good, believe me. But, there are just certain positions in society that carry more status than others. If that's what you want'status'then go and get it.
Unless your parents are still living your life for you and really pressured you into something, don't complain about your major. You picked it. In other words, you made your bed, so jump in and sleep in it.
If you're majoring in something that for most people does not translate into making a lot of money, be aware of what you are getting yourself into. Do not find yourself in twenty years complaining about money. If you want money now or think you mightwant money in the future, go and get it. Don't complain about the situation you put yourself into. You can change. Whether it's tomorrow or 10 years from now, live life how you want. This, however, does not mean it will be easy to change tomorrow or in 10 years, but that is the notion you have to get away from. Once you get over the idea that life is supposed to be easy you will start to work for things like never before.
I really wanted to write this because I sometimes think people get so caught up in how the world has screwed them over or dealt them a bad hand. Everyone has that, though. Everybody, at one point or another, takes a bad beat. The world doesn't owe you anything. It does not owe you an easy or painless existence. Just work hard and you will go very far in whatever direction you choose.
You are more than just a kid who works on computer programs, writes research papers or does lab-reports. Your major does not define you. Don't let it.
