After suffering two hard-fought losses on the road, the University of Dayton men's soccer team was able to re-group and finish with an undefeated record in the Dayton Flyer Marriot Classic this weekend.

The Flyers defeated Marshall and Cal Poly University at Baujan Field. The two wins now bring the men to a 3-2-0 season record and a 2-0 record at home.

The wins also allowed the Flyers to break their goalless streak, as they had originally gone almost 200 minutes without recording a score.

After coming home from the two games in California, the Flyers took the week leading up to the tournament as a time to prepare.

'We had a good week after California,' said coach Dennis Currier. 'We had some very intense practices.

'I thought we battled real hard. The most important thing for us is getting the two wins this weekend.'

On Friday, the Flyers started tournament play against Marshall.

The Flyers earned their first goal in the 32nd minute off the foot of freshman Joe Olwig. The first half ended with the Flyers up by one and out shooting Marshall 11-3.

Play continued in the second half until the 75th minute when senior Lubomir Bogdanov gave a pass to Damion Blackburn 15 feet from the net. Blackburn responded, netting the second and last goal of the game. Senior Steve Ladislaw defended the goal for the Flyers, making four saves.

Sunday marked the last day of the tournament as UD took on Cal Poly. The Flyers defense was ready from the beginning as Cal Poly's Eric Ward took a shot in the tenth minute. Senior Nate Darr responded, the game remained scoreless. The first half ended with a 0-0 score and each team registered three shots.

After halftime, the Flyers came into the game ready to play, immediately opening with a shot by junior Jonathon Welsh.

Although the ball was wide right of the goal the first shot was a sign of good things to come.

In the 70th minute senior George Nanchoff headed a ball into the goal box to Dasan Robinson. Robinson then collided with Cal Poly's goalie, Jeremy Coupe, and Welsh was able to recover the ball and score for the Flyers. The goal marked Welsh's first for UD and goalie Ladislaw's second shutout of the season.

The two victories this weekend earned Dayton the runner-up tournament title.

The Flyers two wins tied Duquesne, but Duquesne took the tournament as a result of the tie breaker, goals scored.

UD players also earned spots on the All-Classic team as Ladislaw, Darr and senior Terry Alvino were recognized for their outstanding play. Ladislaw was also recognized for his performance as he was named the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer player of the week.

With four games remaining until conference play begins for the Flyers, Coach Currier has said the team will be using the upcoming games for preparation.

'We need to make sure we have everything in order for conference play,' Coach Currier said. 'The most important thing for us is to get into the conference tournament.'

The Flyers will continue the season next at the Aces Soccer Classic Tournament in Evansville, Ind. Games against No. 11 Missouri State and Evansville are scheduled for Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:30 p.m., respectively.
