The University of Dayton football team continued its recent dominance of Morehead State University with a 42-7 win over the Eagles Saturday.
The Flyers defeated Morehead State for the seventh straight time and have allowed the Eagles only seven points in the teams' last four meetings.
Wide receiver Jack O'Dell, a red-shirt sophomore, returned the opening kickoff 54 yards to set up great field position for UD. Eight plays later, quarterback Kevin Hoyng put the Flyers on top 7-0 with a ten-yard touchdown run.
UD held that 7-0 lead until a breakout second quarter. The Flyers scored on all three of their possessions to put up 21 second-quarter points.
Fullback Matt Mong scored on a one-yard plunge, and Hoyng rushed for his second touchdown of the game, a 49-yard scamper. Senior running back Steve Verhoff capped the first-half scoring with a determined six-yard touchdown run.
The second quarter explosion allowed UD to take a 28-0 halftime lead and put the game out of reach. The Flyers out-gained MSU 193 to 26 in the second frame.
The offensive fireworks were put on hold as the teams battled to a scoreless third quarter. But on the first play of the fourth, Hoyng found his tight-end Matt Champa for a touchdown strike of 48 yards. UD was cruising with a 35-0 lead. Running back Greg Wimberley extended the Flyers' lead to 42 after a 12-yard TD run.
Morehead State spoiled UD's efforts for a third shutout in four games this season. With 3:37 to play, Eagles quarterback Brian Yost threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to put MSU on the board.
Safety Steve McDonald led the Flyer defense with 8.5 tackles, seven of them solo. Linebackers Brian Kelly and John Hoppe made seven and 6.5 tackles respectively. nickelback Jared Frank added six hits on the day.
Cornerback Casey Klaus intercepted two Yost passes, and fellow corner Chance Walton picked off another. Kelly and defensive lineman Tom Jakacki each forced a fumble in the game.
Hoyng led the offensive attack for UD with 284 yards of total offense. The redshirt sophomore QB rushed 13 times for 76 yards including two touchdowns. Hoyng completed 12 of his 16 passes for 208 yards and another touchdown through the air.
Ryan Wrobleski caught six passes for 95 yards, and O'Dell added 37 yards on four receptions. Wimberley carried the ball eight times for 49 yards against the Eagles, and backup quarterback Robert Dence had two rushes for 33 yards. Dence also went two-for-two passing for 27 yards.
The Flyers improve to 4-0, making them the only undefeated team in Division I-AA Mid-Major football. The win should allow UD to maintain its No. 1 ranking in both the Sports Network and the Football Gazette I-AA Mid-Major rankings. The Eagles drop to 3-1 after the loss.
The Flyers return home to Welcome Stadium Saturday to host Jacksonville. The game will celebrate 100 years of varsity football at UD. The reunion celebration will include a pre-game tailgate, on-field ceremony, and a post-game reception.
