The UD women's volleyball team followed up a tough loss in 5 games to Atlantic 10 conference newcomer Charlotte with a dominating win over the George Washington Colonials.
The Flyers, led by outside hitter Robynne Green's 14 kills and Adrienne Green's 14 digs, swept the Colonials in 3 games.
The Flyers led the entire first game winning 30-20. George Washington stepped up their effort in the second game and challenged the Flyers by tying the game 4 times and taking the lead once. Despite a closer game, UD almost always led and edged out the Colonials 30-23.
Going into the third game, the Flyers were excited for what they hoped would be a sweep. Indeed, it was. This game, much like the second, was close and ended with a 30-27 Flyer victory.
This weekend proved to be very important for the UD volleyball team, as it marked the opening of conference action. The Flyers were the A-10 regular season and tournament champions in the 2004 season, and they hope to follow up with a stellar 2005 season.
They have struggled early in the season but have faced tough opposition on the road and are optimistic that their A-10 play will be better.
'It was good to get a win' (George Washington) is a solid team' said Coach Tim Horsmon He added, 'It was good to get back on winning track. Hopefully we will gain momentum from this win.'
Before the game Saturday, Junior Faye Barhorst was honored after becoming a member of the 1,000 kill club, a very prestigious honor, which is especially notable because she has only played in 81 career matches. She ranks 11th all-time and the 15th member of the prestigious UD club.
At the conclusion of the weekend, the Flyers are 6-9 overall with a 1-1 conference record, while the George Washington Colonials dropped to 4-9 and 0-2 in conference play.
These two teams will not meet again until possibly the A-10 Tournament Nov. 18-19 in Kingston, RI. The Flyers were picked to win the A-10 West Division over Saint Louis, Xavier, Duquesne and Rhode Island.
The next match for the UD volleyball team is Sept. 27. The match is at 7 p.m. at the Frericks center.
