Although the University of Dayton's women's soccer team is only just starting conference games, one individual has already established herself as a go-to player for the Flyers.
Senior forward Reba Sedlacek has secured her position as a key member of the Flyers 2005 lineup. As the defending Atlantic 10 offensive player of the year, team captain Sedlacek also was named a pre-season all-conference selection and earned the distinction of Atlantic 10 women's soccer player of the week for her play in the Nike Dayton Flyer Invitational.
In the Invitational, Sedlacek was again recognized for offensive skills as she was also named the Offensive MVP for the weekend.
According to women's soccer coach Mike Tucker, Sedlacek is a leader on and off the field. As of Sept. 19, Sedlacek has played in every match of the season for the Flyers, leading the team in goals scored (3), shots on goal (9) and game-winning goals (2).
The last two years Sedlacek has been the team's top scorer and was the first Flyer since 2000 to earn the conference's top offensive honor. Off the field, the exercise science and fitness management major has also excelled as she has been honored with a position on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team and the All-District Academic team for the last two seasons.
With Dayton being tabbed as the team to beat in the Atlantic 10 this year, it is clear to see Sedlacek plays an integral role to the team's success. Coach Tucker knows the progression Sedlacek has made over the last three years and has seen how she has developed into an outstanding player.
'She has always been a good player but she learned what it takes to succeed collegiately. She is a tremendous student, athlete and player,' Coach Tucker said.
As the Flyers begin conference action and look to the post season, Sedlacek will be looked upon to fill her role as a key player. With this season being her last as a Flyer, Coach Tucker knows it will be difficult to replace his 5-10 forward.
'It's always hard to replace those kinds of people and players' Coach Tucker added. 'I'm sad to see her leave but hopefully we can bring in more of those kinds of players' said Tucker.
Sedlacek and the rest of the Flyers will look to defend their conference title and team accolades with upcoming games against St. Joseph's on Baujan Field Friday at 7:30 p.m. and against Temple at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
