Men's Soccer splits pair in EvansvilleThe men's soccer team bounced back from a loss Friday with a six-goal explosion Sunday.
The Flyers battled No. 14 Missouri State Friday, but a goal in the 55th minute gave MSU a 1-0 win. UD goalkeeper Steve Ladislaw made six saves, but his shutout streak came to an end at 234:27. Ladislaw has allowed only one goal in 270 minutes between the pipes for UD.
UD had scored six goals in its first six games of the season, and the Flyers matched that total against Evansville Sunday. Forwards Omar Jarun and Jonathan Welsh and midfielder Joe Olwig scored two goals apiece in UD's 6-2 win.
The Flyers placed second in the tournament. Welsh, Jarun and defender Ian Mulligan made the All-Tournament Team. UD's record goes to 4-3-0, and the Flyers are back in action as they host Michigan Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Baujan Field.
Women's Soccer shuts out Xavier
The women's soccer team improved to 5-2-2 after shutting out rival Xavier 3-0 Sunday. Goalkeeper Niki Reed made seven saves as the Flyers won their 12th consecutive A-10 match dating back to last season.
In the 33rd minute, sophomore April Carbajal ripped a shot that was saved by XU goalkeeper Lindsey Cullins. UD's Amanda Gallow was there to collect the rebound and score the game's first goal. The goal was Gallow's second of the season, and Carbajal was credited with the assist.
A Xavier foul left the door open for UD again later in the first half. Senior Katie Lowstuter played a free kick to sophomore Jen Leslie at the top of the goal crease. Leslie beat Cullins for the goal and gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead heading to half time.
Kristen Persichini netted her first goal of the season in the 65th minute to extend the UD lead to 3-0. Reba Sedlacek found an open Persichini in front of the XU goal, and Persichini beat the keeper from close range.
The Flyers have now won eight straight matches against XU. UD returns to action next weekend with a pair of home A-10 matches against Saint Joseph's Friday night and Temple on Sunday.
Women's Cross Country finishes fifth
The women's cross country team placed fifth in the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday. Freshmen Amy Kempf led the Flyers as she finished in 21st place with a time of 18:54.
Sophomore Corey Fullenkamp finished in 19:10, freshman Anne Oltman crossed the finish line in 19:47 and junior Meg Watkins ran the course in 19:36. All three scored for UD in the meet.
The cross country team travels to Delaware, OH, for the All-Ohio Championships on Oct. 7.
