Everyone makes mistakes.

For the Flyer News staff, one of those mistakes landed a Sept. 27 headline on the online 'Gawker' blog, gawker.com.

'We've received a lot of publicity in the past for our ACP All-American honors and our ACP Hall of Fame honors,' Editor-in-Chief Jerry Martin said. 'I was just hoping we could avoid the publicity this time.'

The headline from the Opinions section read, 'Communication majors as smart as anyone, stigma is 'ignorant' and rediculous [sic].'

It was paired with an opinions piece written by junior Lauren Caggiano, though she did not write the headline.

'The only unfortunate part of the whole event was that people were laughing at the wrong person,' Martin said. 'A lot of the blame was placed on Lauren and she had absolutely nothing to do with it. That was Flyer News senior editors and she should not receive any criticism for it at all.'

Martin said the staff wishes to apologize to Lauren for any criticism she received for the mistake.

'Every newspaper makes mistakes,' Martin said. 'Most of them just aren't as apparent or ironic as that one.'
