The UD community is filled with a diverse cross section of people from many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Quite often, this diversity is celebrated on campus with the various events held throughout the year. It is these events that help cultivate and nurture just what makes UD great: its people. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Steering Committee (LGBTA) on campus is now displaying that pride and concern for equality in a display case on the first floor of KU.
The display, entitled 'Breaking Silence In the UD Community,' will be on display from Oct. 3-9. It will also be shown at ArtStreet during 'Stop Hate' week from Oct. 24-30. This collage includes quotes and stories of what it is like to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered at UD. The stories will be from current students, alumni, faculty and staff and will be centered around raising awareness. They also will serve as a reminder that a great deal of work is still needed to be done to ensure that all people at UD are treated with dignity and respect. It is only through this dignity and respect UD will become a better place for all members of its community
So often college students are bombarded with advertisements or information concerning all sorts of topics. This display should not be treated with disregard. Do not simply walk by this and ignore it as just another collection of useless information. It is far from it.
Take some time out of your day and observe the stories and information given in the case. It is through this type of non-confrontational education that people can be taught not to hate or discriminate against those who are different from themselves. This display does just that and should be given the attention it deserves.
Read the stories. Ponder the quotes. Think about how you treat different members of the UD community and ask yourself whether you are part of the problem or part of the solution.
