UD falls 1-0 to St. Joe's, first loss at Baujan in 2005 season
Before 717 fans at Baujan Field, women's soccer team (5-3-2) suffered a 1-0 upset loss at the hands of Saint Joseph's Friday night.
This was Dayton's first home loss in 15 tries dating back to last season.
If the plan was to put pressure on the Flyer defense early on, then the Hawks did not waste any time. In the 17th minute, Ali Wean put the Hawks ahead. It was her second goal of the season.
She retrieved the ball off a rebound and slipped it past UD goalkeeper Niki Reed into the left corner of the net.
The goal, along with five clutch saves by St. Joseph's goalkeeper Nicole DiEnna, was all the Hawks needed to hold off the Flyers.
"I give Saint Joseph's a lot of credit," UD head coach Mike Tucker said. "They came in with a game plan and executed and we were not able to adjust. We were out-competed and out-coached by a good team tonight."
The loss was Dayton's first in 11 games against the team from Philadelphia. St. Joseph's was also able to avenge last year's 2-1 semifinal loss to Dayton in the A-10 Tournament. Dayton then went on to win the 2004 A-10 Tournament Championship.
With goalkeeper Niki Reed keeping the Flyers in the game, they sought to tie the score in the second half.
Freshman Amanda Gallow sent the ball into the box where it was received by sophomore Natalia Walters. Walters capitalized and sent it to the back of the net. As the celebration ensued the line judge called off the goal because Walters was just beyond the SJU defender, thus making the play off-sides and rendering the goal null.
Late in the second half, the Flyers had several opportunities to tie the match, but DiEnna stopped the rally to preserve the shutout.
The shutout marked the first time since 2002 that the Flyers have not been able to record a goal in a home match. The contest was also the first time since 1997 that the Flyers haven't scored a goal in a conference match played at Baujan Field.
Coach Tucker was not pleased with the intensity of the team throughout the game.
"Our consistency has to get better," Tucker said. "And we need to start playing with urgency. We don't start playing with any intensity until we get behind and, in order for us to be successful down the stretch, that has to change."
UD out-shot SJU 13-8 in the contest, topping the Hawks 6-2 in the second half. Amanda Gallow led the Flyers with four shots on goal. The loss bumps the Flyers down to sixth in the Atlantic-10 Conference standings.
The Flyers look to bounce back from this defeat when they head to Washington, D.C. to take on conference foe George Washington on Friday and then the team will head north for another conference clash with La Salle on Sunday Oct. 9.
