Get ready for those cold Ghetto nights: a guide to fashion on a college budget

As far as winter fashion goes, the students at UD have perfected being fashionably late to class over anything else.

This campus embraces trends that are more about comfort than style, as the bookstore makes a killing on any and all sweat suit gear. However, while we admittedly aren't known for our popped collars and pearls, students on campus have a couple tricks up their cinched trench coat sleeves for this winter season.

Long, oversized sweaters for women are a great compromise between comfort and style, paired with a great pair of thicker leggings or dark tights. These sweaters can be worn with a large belt, the wider the better, cinched just below the chest and creating a dress within the sweater. Keep in mind that taking a chance with a red belt can always add a little color and holiday cheer to the ensemble.

A great jacket is always a staple in any season, and as winter approaches, stay warm with tweed, velvet or corduroy. These tailored jackets can be worn over a dress or compliment a pair of jeans and a long shirt. For a slightly different spin, army fatigues and combat gear have also been making an appearance lately, and we'll be seeing a lot more of the hunter green and charcoal gray pilot jackets that can transition into winter when paired with a thick scarf and a corduroy newsboy cap.

Boots are all the rage and there really is no way to go wrong; leggy ladies tend to don mid-calf high boots tucked into skinny jeans, while shorter girls love zip up ankle boots with black tights. Either look is classic and interchangeable and can be worn in brown, black or beige, and can be scrunched, buckled or zipped.

When the snow hits and you fear for your leather's life, UGG boots are a safe bet, as they are roomy with fur lining and waterproof, and can be dressed up with jeans or dressed down for class with sweatpants.

Guys, you're not forgotten, as men's fashion remains consistent with long-sleeved layers worn under puffy vests, sweater zip-ups and oxford shirts. And don't just save those wool polo sweaters for Thanksgiving or Christmas with grandma, as these sweaters with the three-button plackets or crewnecks can be donned during a weekend out-and-about in the Ghetto (you just may be a bit toasty once inside Tim's). Sweaters simply not for you? Even the most fashion-phobic of men can rock a knit cotton jersey shirt without feeling like they've betrayed their manhood for Vogue's sake.

Also, designers alike this season are embracing corduroys pants for men over women. There is a wide range of cuts and colors available for this heavy pant, and cords are most popular in navy, olive and camel brown colors.

Regardless your fashions choices for this winter season, remember to keep in mind that hot looks for less can always be uncovered. A trendy coat doesn't have to make a dent in your weekend festivities budget!
