The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), held their annual induction ceremony on Sunday, October 29th, at 2:00 p.m. in Kennedy Union Ballroom.

As sunlight streamed through the windows, new members, accompanied by their parents and guests, eagerly awaited the start of the ceremony.

Following the introduction of officers, Professor Damon Sink and Dr. Jason Pierce, both faculty members at UD, were introduced and honored as Distinguished Members of NSCS. Mr. Patrick Burke, J.D., CPA, and UD grad, was the keynote speaker. Brad Balser, the Assistant Director of Leadership and Involvement, remarked that there was great potential for the organization as a whole if all members become active.

The Dayton Chapter of NSCS was started in 2001, and currently has 1,665 members. Requirements of NSCS are that you are in the top 20 percent of your class and have at least a 3.4 GPA. Candidates receive invitations to join during the second semester of their first year, and into their second year of college.

After paying a one-time membership fee, members are invited to attend induction, which is held annually in the fall to officially welcome and acknowledge the achievements of the new members.

NSCS is not just about academics. As academic leaders, members are also called to serve others. NSCS participates in many service projects such as Project Schoolbag (making educational games and tools for children in El Salvador), Greensweep, and Christmas on Campus. NSCS is also developing a Planning for College Success program, where members go to local high schools to encourage academic success and promote higher education.

We would like to encourage all our members to get involved and come learn about some of the benefits of being a member at our next meeting, which is on November 16, 2006, at 7:30 in McGinnis Center.

On behalf of NSCS and our entire Dayton Chapter, we would like to extend our congratulations to all of our new members and encourage you to become active and make the most of your membership.

Please feel free to contact either of our co-presidents Stephanie Benes at benesstj@notes.udayton.edu or Amanda Walz at walzamae@notes.udayton.edu for more information about our organization.
