UD will keep busy over break with roadtrips

Are you planning on just laying back and taking it easy over the semester break? Hoping not to really exert yourself and prep for the rough second semester ahead?

While most UD students will be relaxing for at least 18 days over break, the women's basketball team will have less than a quarter of that for themselves. The Flyers will be on the road, competing in four away games over the course of the winter break.

UD enters the four game run with current regular season record of four wins and five losses. The Flyers will be traveling all over, to South Carolina and New Hampshire, and to as close as Fairborn.

UD opens up play during break with a trip down south. The Flyers will take on the Clemson Tigers in Littlejohn Coliseum at 5 p.m.

The Tigers are coming off a 2005-06 season where they compiled an 8-21 record, including an opening round loss to NC State in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

Currently, Clemson holds a 3-5 record, with the team's wins against The College of Charleston, St. John's, and Furman. Junior D'Lesha Loyd will be one the Flyer defense will need to watch. The guard/forward leads the team with 104 points for the season, 29 of which came in the win against St. John's.

Classmate Tasha Taylor will also be another player UD will need to watch out for. Taylor is second on the team with 100 points for the season. Redshirt freshman Christy Brown has tallied 47 assists for the team in her first time in the orange uniform.

After the game against Clemson, the Flyers will travel back to Dayton in a cross-town contest. UD and Wright State will meet at the Nutter Center on Dec. 22 for a 7 p.m. tip off.

The last meeting between the two teams ended in a close UD victory, 63-59. Although WSU is currently only 1-6 for the season, the Flyers will need to be wary of senior Tyanda Hammock.

Hammock is the current Horizon League women's basketball player of the week after averaging 18 points in the Raiders last two games. She leads Wright State in points, rebounds, assists and steals, and is also ranked in the Horizon League conference in those categories as well. The forward also sits at second in the conference in minutes played per game, as she has averaged 36.3 minutes in the Raiders seven game season so far.

After the two games against Clemson and Wright State, the Flyers will have a quick break to enjoy the holidays. Practice resumes on Dec. 26, as the team prepares for the rest of the games over break.

UD will then travel to Hanover, NH for the Blue Sky Classic, hosted by Dartmouth. The tournament runs from Dec. 29-30, with the Flyers opening up with a game against Boston University.

BU has faced some tough competition in the young season this year. The Terriers lost to No. 7 UConn and No. 12/14 Arizona State, 84-51 and 75-53, respectively. BU did, however, earn a win against fellow A-10 school, Rhode Island, 82-66. UD will match up against Rhode Island in February.

Lead by Katie Mienhardt, who is averaging 13.7 points per game, the Terriers are hoping to improve their current 4-3 record over the tournament and eventually improve on their runner-up finish in the America East Conference.

Depending on the outcome of the Dayton/BU game and the Dartmouth/Duke game, which will take place after the Flyers play, UD could face either Dartmouth or Duke in the consolation or championship final, and either opponent will be tough.

Dartmouth will have home field advantage; unfortunately, this has not helped the Big Green this season. The women's basketball team sits at a 0-5 record. Last year Dartmouth tied for first in the Ivy League with a 12-2 conference record, and made an appearance in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Having accumulated 15 Ivy League titles, two in the last two seasons, the team will always be one to watch despite their slow start this year.

Dayton also has the possibility of playing basketball powerhouse Duke in the tournament. The current No. 4 ranked team in the country is undefeated this year, going 7-0. In two games this season, fans saw the Blue Devils tally scores of over 100 points. One high scoring game was in an exhibition match against Andersen University, in a blowout 107-37. The second 100 point game was in a regular season match-up against Northeastern, in a 102-49 win.

Whichever team faces Duke in the tournament, they will have to pressure sophomore Abby Waner, who is averaging 16 points per game. All the players on the roster will be a threat as 10 have registered playing time and points on the board. Duke shows its strong offense and defense, as it has outscored its opponents, 590 to 308 this season.

The four games over the winter break will definitely present the Flyers with many challenges.

'We just know that we all have to show up every game, and give it our best to make sure we come up on top every time, which we are all capable of doing,' UD forward, junior Nikki Oakland said about the four game stretch.

Knowing they will have to play top notch basketball, UD is ready to impress in their winter break road trips. If the Flyers are capable of playing some great basketball, they could really come back to Dayton, and a new semester, having impressed many.

Once the Flyers finally return to UD, they do not have much of a break, however. The women are back at it at home, with a game against St. Francis on Jan. 3 at UD Arena at 7 p.m.
