A practical guide to keeping resolutions
Bookmark and Share
Every year as the clock strikes 12:00 a.m. on Jan. 1 we vow to change ourselves for the better. Resolutions like eating healthily, exercising, saving money, improving relationships'they all start with good intentions.

But unfortunately most of us fail to keep them through mid February. Keeping resolutions is not impossible, however; you just need some will power and motivation

The following is a guide to keeping your resolutions and staying sane in the process.

Improve Your Health

Instead of telling yourself you'll drop 30 pounds, hit the gym daily or change your eating patterns dramatically, start with a small goal. Shoot for five or 10 pounds then work from there. Make a commitment to overall fitness, not to getting skinny. Start by going to the gym more frequently or increasing the length of sessions. Remember to be realistic. The pressures of school and work often get in the way of a regular fitness routine. Change your diet gradually. Add one more fruit or vegetable serving to your diet. Maybe cut down on your consumption of sweets. You will see results if you stick with a sensible plan. Reward yourself when you succeed.

Improve Your Financial

Situation

By nature, college students are strapped for cash. But you don't need to work three jobs to save money. Start by making small changes to your lifestyle. For example, instead of buying three drinks at the bar, buy two, and then put the money you would have spent in the bank. Before long you will have some newfound money with minimal effort.

Improve Your Relationships

We all know the axiom: 'To have a friend is to be a friend.' This might sound clich??, but it's true. Make time to really listen to your friends. Commit a random act of kindness for someone dear. Treat your roommate to Chipotle or ice cream at The Galley. If you need help in the boyfriend/girlfriend department, you might consider reevaluating the relationship or having a serious talk. Remember a relationship should make both people happy. If you're not content, you should reconsider what you want out of it.

Improve Your Organization

News flash! If you don't have a planner, now is the time to get one. If you have all your appointments and assignments written down, you're less likely to forget about them. If you prefer the wireless route, invest in a Blackberry or PDA. Take some time to thoroughly clean your desk and workspace. According to feng shui, a clean desk is conducive to productivity and success.

Improve Your Grades

Good grades don't come overnight. Rather, it takes hard work and commitment to success. Study in a quiet place to minimize distractions. It might sound drastic, but you might want to sign off your instant messenger to avoid diversions. Study partners are an effective way to learn and review material and be social in the process. Remember, the Write Place is a resource available to all students and useful for those struggling with papers.

So as 45 percent of Americans make resolutions this year, don't be among those who give up by Valentine's Day. The new year is what you make it'why not make 2007 the best year yet? Best of luck!
