Flyer basketball fan Patrick Rizer sat in front of his TV Wednesday night in disbelief, as his beloved Flyers would drop yet another road game this season.
'I love my Flyers, but it's just so disappointing watching them lose one road game after another,' Rizer said with a clenched fist.
The Flyers fell victim to the St. Louis Billiken's 66-56 at the Scottrade Center, losing their second game in a row in their quest for a spot in the A-10 tournament.
With senior forward Monty Scott out for the season due to a torn tendon in his knee, the Flyers would have to play this game without their senior leader. Both the Flyers (16-10, 6-7) and the Billikens (17-10, 7-6) possessed a record of 6-6 in the Atlantic 10 going into this matchup, as this was a pivotal game as far as standings go.
The Flyers started the game off hot, shooting lights out, jumping to a quick lead while making their first five baskets. Their five turnovers and lack of success on their next several possessions let the Billikens fight their way back into the game, tying the game at 13-13 with 11:25 left in the half.
The Billikens continued putting together a 16-2 run, running the score up to 20-13 with 8:34 left on the clock. Junior Forward Norman Plummer would score the first Flyers' basket in over eight minutes, as sophomore forward Charles Little continued to shoot perfectly, cutting the deficit to three points with a jumper with 7:00 left before the half.
The next several minutes were back and forth basketball, with no team jumping out too far ahead of the other.
But after a 5-0 Billikens run, the Billikens were up 30-22 with 1:23 left before the buzzer. Junior guard Brian Roberts hit a shot to cut the lead to six, but the Billikens put the lead to eight on their next possession.
After missing a 3-pointer at the buzzer, Roberts and his Flyers would have some catching up to do as the Billikens lead 32-24 going into the locker room. The Flyers were shooting just 2-8 from behind the 3-point arch, and would need to start taking less difficult shots if they wanted a chance at winning this.
The Billikens opened up the half with an easy basket, putting them up by a 10-point lead. Carried by Little, the Flyers would edge their way closer to narrowing the gap, with heavy opposition by their opponents.
Back-to-back three-point baskets by freshman guard London Warren and junior forward Jimmy Binnie would give the Billikens only a 39-38 lead with 11:57 left in the game.
The Flyers would again start to slip, as they found themselves down by seven with 7:52. The Billikens would hold their ground, not letting the Flyers get within less than six points of them the rest of the game.
The final six minutes were painful for the Flyers, as every time they seemed to get close, the Billikens would strike right back, shutting down any hopes of a comeback.
As the final minute ticked off the clock, the Flyers tried to scramble as many points as they could, but came up empty, losing the game by a score of 66-56.
The Flyers were led by Little ,who finished with a career high 23 points, shooting 11-16 while adding six rebounds. Roberts finished with 13 points, while Binnie added 9 points and 9 rebounds.
The Billikens were led by guard Kevin Lisch who finished with 22 points and center Ian Vouyoukas who had 10 points and six rebounds.
This loss plummets the Flyers to eighth place in the A-10, with just three games left in the regular season.
The Flyers come home to play conference rival Xavier on Saturday and will try to break out of their two-game losing streak before traveling to Temple on Wednesday to play their final away game of the season.
