Submarine House: one of Brown Street's best kept secrets
Bookmark and Share
Do you find yourself always going to the same place and getting bored with the same sandwiches? Maybe it's time to try something different.

Submarine House, located on Brown Street just a few doors down from Jimmy John's and Penn Station, is often overlooked by UD students.

Unlike other mainstream sandwich/sub restaurants on Brown Street, The Submarine House is a local chain only found in the Dayton area. The restaurant itself exudes an old homey feeling. It is rather small with a counter and tables for two to four people. There are posters on the wall that look like they've been there since 1975 and classic rock is always playing on the radio.

All of the subs come in sizes of four, eight, or 16 inches. This is one aspect that makes it stand apart from other sub restaurants whose 12-inch subs might not be enough for some big appetites.

Junior political science major George Ertle is a frequent customer of Submarine House. His favorite sub is the Italian.

'The hot pepper relish is delicious and it makes it very unique,' he said. 'It's like a party in my mouth.'

Submarine House's most popular subs are its Philly cheese steak, Italian and super turkey. The subs range in price from a four-inch for $2.59 to a 16-inch starting for as little as $8.59. You have the choice of Italian white or honey wheat bread.

Despite its name, Submarine House has several other items on its menu besides subs. It also has pizza, chicken wings, chicken tenders, gyros and an assortment of salads. With your sub, you can get a side of fries, onion rings, chili or soup.

For the health-conscious, there is a section on the menu with a few 'healthier favorites.' I chose the grilled chicken breast sub off this section and it was very tasty.

By comparison, you get more food for your money at Submarine House than Subway or Penn Station. Even if you want a good sandwich and don't feel like walking, Submarine House will deliver to your house or dorm. They also take call-ahead orders, so it's ready when you arrive.

'I choose the Submarine House over Penn Station and the like for the same reason I go to Waffle House instead of IHOP,' Ertle said. 'Sure, IHOP looks nicer, but Waffle House has character. The Submarine House has character as well.'

One downfall for UD students is that Submarine House does not accept Flyer Express like its competition Jimmy John's and Subway. But to help out a little bit, there are coupons in the back of your UD phone directory to 'buy one sub, get one free.'

So next time you are hungry for a sub, try out Submarine House and be ready to experience, in the words of Ertle, 'a party in your mouth.'

Submarine House is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. Visit the restaurant on the Web at http://www.submarinehouse.com.
