Down by seven points at the half, the Flyers rallied back by putting together a strong second half effort to lead them to an opening round victory against the Charlotte 49ers, winning by a final score of 81-63.

This marked the third straight victory for the Flyers, who came into the Atlantic 10 tournament as an eight-seed, going against the ninth seeded team which they split victories with earlier in the season. The Flyers defeated the 49ers at home back in January only to fall to them in Charlotte just 13 days later.

Junior guard Brian Roberts, the winner of the White-Allen Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight season, finished the contest with a game-high 24 points, hitting 70 percent (7-10) of his total field goals while hitting 80 percent (4-5) from downtown.

'Brian showed why he is one of the elite players in this league in the second half through his aggressiveness,' head coach Brian Gregory said after the game.

The game started out neck and neck, with each team exchanging leads throughout the first six minutes of the game. A 3-pointer by Roberts tied the game at 10 a piece with 13:58 left in the half.

The 49ers then built a seven point lead as Leemire Goldwire hit a 3-pointer plus the foul shot, giving his team a 27-20 advantage with 6:33 on the clock. The Flyers fought their way back to within one point with a layup by Roberts with 2:06 left, but their effort was quickly answered by the 49ers' offense. As both teams went into the locker room, the 49ers led the Flyers by a score of 35-28.

A 3-pointer by freshman guard Marcus Johnson tied the game at 45-45 with 14:24 as the Flyers started to heat up.

The Flyers would put together a powerful 15-2 run to put them up 63-52 with 6:03 left in the contest. That lead continued to hold, as the Flyers found themselves up by 13 as junior forward hit a jumper with 2:02 left on the clock.

With just 31 seconds left before the buzzer, Atlantic City would get to see the Flyers unload their bench, as the game fell well out of the 49ers grasp. The Flyers would go on to win the contest by a total of 18 points, overcoming the 49ers by a score of 81-63.

The Flyers' 53 second half points were a season high for the team, as the Flyers improved to 19-11 overall this season. The team shot an outstanding 66.7% from the field in the second half, and finished the entire game shooting 55.8%

The team's 11 total 3-pointers were also a season high, as Roberts and junior forward Jimmie Binnie each chipped in four.

The 49ers were led by Goldwire, who finished with 23 total points, as well as De'Angelo Alexander and E.J. Drayton, who tallied up 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Flyers' Binnie and sophomore forward Charles Little each finished with 12 points, while Norman added 10 of his own before fouling out. Freshman guard London Warren also had a great came, finishing with a career high eight assists and coming up with a huge block in the second half.

Roberts spoke highly of his teammate after the game saying, 'London has developed into a real good point guard; he's light years ahead of where he was when he stated here and that's just a credit to him and how hard he's worked, how well he's listened to the coaches and just buying into the system that we have at Dayton.'

Head coach of the 49ers Bobby Lutz was impressed with the Flyers' second half performance. 'Obviously Dayton played a terrific second half. We were happy with the first half and being up seven. We just couldn't make a stop in the second half. We played three different defenses, but it didn't seem to matter.'

Lutz continued, saying 'We executed our game plan very well in the first half. In the second half, if you look at it, defensively it seemed to be a combination of a lapse or two and the other team making plays. You have to give Dayton some credit.'
