Completing projects and making copies for classes will be more convenient for most students beginning in April. The UD Copy Center will leave Zehler Hall and relocate to the former gift shop space in Kennedy Union next to Boll Theatre.
According to the Copy Center manager, this change will benefit the students and the business.
'We are very fortunate,' Louie Brim said. 'It's a great place for business. The building is in the center of campus and students pass by all the time more than they do by Zehler Hall. They are trying to get us in a place where more students can reach us, and I think this move is a very good thing.'
Brim commented that there are a lot of businesses and organizations moving on campus, and the Copy Center fit right in the mix. The Fitz Center for Leadership in Community, currently located in St. Joseph Hall, is also growing and will expand into the old Copy Center space.
'When they looked around campus, the space in KU was the best fit for us,' Brim said. 'We are a small campus without a lot of room to work with so we got lucky with our space.'
The construction for the new Copy Center began in mid-February after the gift shop moved out of KU. It was initially expected to be completed this month, but as March is ending, the business will most likely open in early April.
'While we are in our transition between buildings we may be down for a day,' Brim said. 'We want to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause everyone, but there is no way around it while moving.'
The new location will offer about the same room as before and for now the same services. These services include self-service copying in black and white and full color, several binding methods for books and projects, and folding of final projects.
Laminating options, several paper and envelope options, and graduation announcements are also available for students, faculty and staff. The UD Copy Center allows customers to scan in documents or connect the output digitally to the high speed black and white and full color machines.
According to Facilities Management, the estimated cost for the new Copy Center project is $102,942.
The Copy Center was established in 1997 to assist the needs of students, faculty and staff without forcing them to leave campus for these services. It is a part of UD Printing and Design, which handles graphic design, digital copying, offset printing and full service mailing. This business began in 1957 to serve the UD community.
Currently the Copy Center is the only section of UD Printing and Design that remains in Zehler Hall. Over the summer all printing, design and mailing services relocated to the first floor of the College Park Center on Brown Street.
According to Brim, the Copy Center staff is excited to leave Zehler Hall and occupy the new space in KU.
'We look forward to seeing you in KU soon,' she said. 'This is really a good thing!'
