Action in '300' second to none

'300' has hit the radar of film aficionados nationwide

The movie is the most recent of Frank Miller's graphic novels to be adapted to film. Similar to the adaptation of Miller's 'Sin City,' '300' was shot almost completely with CGI technology. The co-writer and director of '300' Zack Snyder does an amazing job bringing this graphic novel to life in a truly artistic and visionary way. '300' is 117 minutes of action packed heroism, honor, and sacrifice.

'300' is loosely based on the heroic resistance of the somewhat-united Greeks at the pass of Thermopylae against a much larger Persian army led by Xerxes. In the Hollywood version, the story starts starts with King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) refusing to submit to the conquest of Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and the Persian army. When the council and the oracle failed to do anything about the approaching threat of the Persians, Leonidas gathered 300 'bodyguards' to protect him as he scouted the area. The movie then tells the heroic story of the 300 Spartans and their multiple battles that delay the advancement of the Persian army. It is a tale of heroism, glory, deception and the art of war.

'300' is a tremendous film filled with unbelievable action, deception, violence, and amazing imagery. The action, in particular, is non-stop and well orchestrated. The casting is phenomenal and the acting is nearly flawless. Butler plays the role of King Leonidas with conviction and unbelievable power. His deep and brash voice lends credence to his words as he talks of the love of Sparta and the need to defend it. The role of Queen Gorgo was played by seasoned actress Lena Headey. Headey plays a powerful Spartan woman who will not take no for an answer and is just as ferocious as her male counter-part. Overall, the acting is very impressive and adds to the overall power and impact of the film.

'300' is currently in theaters nationwide and is worth a trip to the movies. However, a warning for the faint at heart: this is a violent film and does contain some nudity, which gives it the R rating. The movie will keep you at the edge of your seat with its moments of action and excitement. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is a fan of the graphic novel and movies such as 'Sin City.' Overall I would give this film 9 out of 10 stars.
