Red Scare's new version of Drive 75 proved successful, coordinators look to future

Red Scare would like to send out a big thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Drive 75. Without everyone's help, this annual event would not have been such a huge success.

Since Xavier did not participate this year, Drive 75 was changed to involve all student groups and organizations on campus. This change worked well, promoting healthy competition among participants. Registered groups competed to see who could collect the most pounds of food and money. The groups that collected the most were rewarded with a presentation of a plaque at halftime of the Flyers basketball game against the Xavier Musketeers.

Special congratulations go out to those members of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity who won the over 50 member category and the Beta Theta Pi fraternity which won the under 50 member category. In the end, the real winners of Drive 75 are those who benefit from the food and money collected.

UD students were not the only ones getting involved in this worthwhile cause. The Flyer Faithful also pitched in by donating more than $800 before the UD vs. UMASS Men's Basketball game in February. It was encouraging for Red Scare members to see the generosity of fellow Flyer fans.

Through Drive 75, Red Scare's goal was to bring the campus together and generate the same enthusiasm toward helping the Dayton Food Bank and Secret Smiles as we do while cheering on the Flyers. This goal was accomplished far beyond measure.

More than 3,400 pounds of food and $1,200 was collected this year. This amazing effort went to help more than 3,000 Dayton area individuals and families that are not as fortunate. All proceeds went to the Dayton Food Bank and Secret Smiles. The Dayton Food Bank will distribute the food to those in need and Secret Smiles of Dayton will purchase beds and bedding for children in our community.

A thank you is owed to all those who helped behind the scenes: Brad Balser and Student Involvement and Leadership, Red Scare, Secret Smiles, Dayton Food Bank, UD Arena staff, Verst Group Logistics, Residential Services staff, Rosemary O'Boyle, Kim Merrill, Hey O'Grady, and Flyer News.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. We improved on the program this year, and with your help, we can make it even bigger and better in the years to come. Do you think your group has enough 'drive' to get your name engraved on the plaque next year? We look forward to finding out.
