Weekend Scene offers something for everyone

If you want to try something new this weekend that doesn't require you to be 21 years of age or spend any money, here's something to keep in mind.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) is hosting a variety of programs this weekend as part of the Weekend Scene, a program that provides students with a variety of activities to do.

Many things are happening this weekend, including a trip to downtown Dayton, a comedy show, a 5K run/walk, flower pot decorating and a Casino Night.

Venture outside of the Ghetto and explore the city of Dayton as part of Urban Nights. The Downtown Dayton Partnership is teaming with the Dayton arts community and inviting the public to explore downtown Friday.

More than 80 restaurants, art galleries and retailers from downtown Dayton will be showcased. Tours of downtown housing will also be offered. Trolleys will be downtown to shuttle people to more distant locations, such as Front Street, the Oregon District and the Wright-Dunbar Business Village.

There will also be performances by professional and community art groups and a variety of street performers and musicians.

Urban Nights runs from 5 to 10 p.m.; free shuttles will be in front of KU for students every hour. Sign up for this event outside KU 215 or by e-mailing CAB@notes.udayton.edu.

Don't feel like leaving campus? No problem. UD's Boll Theater will host comedian Andrew Kennedy from 9 to 11 p.m. Kennedy has been featured on Comedy Central's 'Premium Blend' and The Metro Channel's 'New Joke City.' His act pokes fun at his relationships with his wife, three children, and his Columbian mother and English father.

Events are going on all day Saturday, too, beginning at 10 a.m. at ArtStreet where the Heaven's Wings 5K Run/Walk is scheduled to start. The cost is $5 to register prior to Saturday (at KU tables during lunch) and $10 the day of the race. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

CAB will also host flower pot decorating Saturday. Bring a little life to your room or house by decorating your very own flower pot. All supplies are provided. Flower pot decorating runs from 7 to 9 p.m. in the KU Pub.

Also on Saturday, Casino Night will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. in Barrett Dining Room. Upon arrival, students will receive a predetermined amount of chips and have their choice in playing games such as blackjack, roulette, chuck-a-luck, and the big wheel.

Chips can be exchanged for raffle tickets for gift certificates to restaurants on Brown Street or, if you do well enough, an iPod.

These events are just some of the many CAB has planned for this school year. You can look forward to trips to Chicago and to Hico, W.Va., for white water rafting in October and a sushi class in November.
