Show off your dance moves Saturday at the kickoff of Cityfolk's World Rhythm Series.

This year's concert is presented in collaboration with UD's Art Series. Cityfolk has worked with UD to 'create a series of concerts that would feature the best in music and dance from around the world.' They have brought performers from all over the globe including Africa, South America, Asia and Europe. They will now be able to add Central America to the list.

Aurelio Martinez, one of Central America's foremost traditional musicians, will grace the stage at Boll Theater at 8 p.m. Saturday. Martinez is widely recognized for his talented work in traditional Garifuna music, which dates back to 1635 when a group of Afro-Caribbeans combined their sound with locals from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

The Garifuna style that is popular today is a variation of traditional tribal, ritual and fertility songs from the Garifuna culture.

Martinez is respected for performances in both predominant styles of Garifuna'punta rock and paranda. Before his popularity in his solo career, Martinez was a member of two successful punta rock bands called Los Gatos Bravos and Lita Gariran, in which he toured throughout the world.

Martinez has played in Dayton once before in July at the previous Cityfolk festival, leaving behind a flock of new fans and enlightened listeners. Director of programs and marketing for Cityfolk, Dave Barber, believes Martinez is the perfect opener for the series.

'[He] is at the forefront of some very exciting music that is being created in Central America and is starting to make its way around the world,' Barber said. 'His band performed at our summer Cityfolk Festival in early July and his high energy sets were one of the biggest hits of the festival. When we had the chance to be part of his fall tour, we jumped at the chance.'

In 2004, Martinez released his first full album entitled 'Garifuna Soul.' It was met with high acclaim. Martinez is continually praised for maintaining the tradition of Garifuna music without letting it become stagnant.

To sample some of Martinez's music, visit http://www.cityfolk.org, or come to Boll Theater Saturday at 8 p.m. to hear him perform. Tickets for the concert are $18, and can be purchased from the Cityfolk Box Office at (937) 496-3863 or at their Web site.
