New coffeehouse opens its doors

It's no secret that college students have very few common interests with those over 35. But Boston Stoker knows of at least one shared desire'and it hopes to capitalize on it.

Boston Stoker President Don Dean believes he holds the secret to pleasing both the aesthetic needs and taste buds of both age groups when it comes to their love of coffee and coffee shops.

Located in the same retail section as Milano's and next to Timothy's Bar, the Night and Day Caf?? will be the first store in the Boston Stoker family that specifically seeks to cater to the coffee connoisseurs in the up-all-night college group while continuing to serve its loyal clientele of business persons and on-the-go parents.

To do this, Night and Day will open its doors at 5:30 a.m. and keep them open until 12:30 a.m. During these hours, they will constantly serve gourmet coffee but will alter the environment in which it is served.

Night and Day Caf?? will begin each morning with a bright, sunny atmosphere that echoes the rising sun and dawning day. The multi-hued color palette paired with abundant lighting will infuse the store with a perky atmosphere to help customers begin their day well. The employees will wear the staple Boston Stoker uniform as they serve patrons.

At 2 p.m., however, the store's atmosphere will darken and the caf?? will become a refuge for the college-age crowd. As the lighting becomes more subtle, the walls will appear to deepen into a purple shade. Music will help establish a moody, contemporary vibe. Comfort will be the watch-word as employees transition into jeans and t-shirts.

'The store's look is completely different,' Dean said. 'It has range. We will still provide the comfortable, eclectic feel that our customers have come to expect, but we will be able to provide a darker, moodier atmosphere as well.'

Dean admitted that the store's original concept is more than a bit 'off the wall.' But the location of Night and Day Caf?? so close to both target audiences provides an ideal place for Dean to establish a successful coffee venue.

'It's the perfect spot for us,' he said. 'We can serve our Oakwood customers and the UD community simultaneously.'

Boston Stoker coffee is already served at various locations on campus, including the Blend and the Galley. This new store, however, provides an opportunity for Boston Stoker to offer the UD community its full line of products, including fruit smoothies and in-house baked Danish pastries.

It also allows the company to emphasize its neighborhood focus, and it is the possibility of working with the UD community that has Dean excited.

Dean wants to use the store to help promote the arts at UD. He is hoping to establish a relationship with on-campus art groups so he can use student art as his primary wall decoration, including devoting an entire wall to display student art and create a rotating gallery. He is also willing to discuss the possibility of allowing music majors to perform small sets in the evening.

'The students will be the ones dictating the environment of the store in the evening,' Dean said. 'We've never done anything like this before so their input is going to be key.'

This extends to the store hours as well.

'If we see the students really responding to the late hours then there is a strong possibility that we'll stay open all the time,' he said.

Night and Day Caf?? is located at 1822 Brown St. If you are interested in more information about arts partnerships, please call (937) 554-6990 or (937) 890-6401 and ask for Don.
