More than 350 students in bright green T-shirts gathered Saturday to dig their feet in the sand and bump, set and spike over the volleyball net.
The second annual Spike for Charity, an all-day volleyball tournament, raised close to $5,000 and fundraising efforts are still being tallied.
Twelve professional fraternities with 45 teams represented 12 nonprofit organizations and started playing at 9 a.m., the last game ending at 7:30 p.m. Pershing Rifles, who went by the team name 'Go Big or Go Home,' won the championship game for the second year in a row. They dominated the courts throughout the day.
Mike Reuther, the event's co-coordinator, helped start Spike for Charity last year in an effort to bring UD's professional fraternities together.
'We're using the unique community and environment of the neighborhood so students can sit on their porches, listen to music and play some volleyball for a great cause,' Reuther said.
Four performances hit the ArtStreet Amphitheatre stage, including Pat Kelly and the faculty band Back Porch Jam, while players ate hotdogs after their games. Spike for Charity purchased over 500 hotdogs for the event and when they ran low, the social fraternity Phi Kappa Psi donated 200 hotdogs.
'It was a collaborative effort between the organizations and we were really impressed with the turn out,' Reuther said.
A pleasant surprise arrived when a representative from the Fisher House Foundation, represented by the Pershing Rifles, came out to the courts to support the team. The Fisher House foundation supports America's military in their time of need.
Psi Chi, the professional psychology fraternity, raised $500, the most donations an organization has raised. The money will go to the Suicide Prevention Center.
'Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves,' said Brad Evans, the event's co-coordinator. 'At first you think that playing at nine in the morning is so early, but once you get out in the sand, the competition starts and everyone has fun.'
Students who participated in Spike for Charity can still attend the Charity Ball April 26. Tickets are $25. Sign up online by tomorrow at www.spikeforcharity.com.
