University of Dayton's Phi Kappa Psi fraternity held Sausage Fest on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in order to raise money for the charity event Relay for Life.
This was the second year the fraternity held Sausage Fest. It began when the brothers were participating in a Mini Heart Marathon in 2008.
"At the race was a John Morrell sausage vendor that was giving
out free samples of the different sausages," Phi Kappa Psi brother sophomore Anthony LoPresti said. "When the marathon was over he had a ton of extra left over. He asked us if, since we were college students, we would want to take them off his hands. I said yes thinking that we would maybe be able to make some money off of them for Relay."
The brothers then held the Sausage Fest at ArtStreet three weeks later.
This year's Sausage Fest included food items other than the John Morrell and Gordon Food Services Polish-style sausages, which were bought with Phi Psi's Philanthropy committee chair Jamie Gross's annual budget.
"For $1 you could get a sausage, a drink and a variety of chips," LoPresti said. LoPresti said the cost was so low in hopes that people would donate extra money, which he said many did.
The fraternity took Flyer Express and cash. Phi Kappa Psi made approximately $530 at this year's Sausage Fest and had leftover
sausages, which they plan on selling in the Ghetto and outside
Timothy's Bar and Grill.
"I feel Sausage Fest was a huge success," LoPresti said. "I remember looking around at everyone at the event and being extremely happy that Phi Psi can organize an event that brings so many different people together. It was great to look around at all the people talking and enjoying the music on such a rainy day."
Sausage Fest customers were also happy with the outcome of the event.
"The sausage I had was a great alternative to spending my Flex money that is basically almost run out, and it was good to know I was helping out the American Cancer Society," freshman Matt Miller said.
Relay for Life is held by the American Cancer Society. Individuals
team up in order to raise money in their group's name for the Society. Phi Kappa Psi brothers said that Relay for Life is one of the fraternities biggest events all year.
"Last year our goal was $10,000 and we managed to raise over $13,000," Anthony LoPresti said. "This year our goal is $15,000 and we are already 40 percent there. We are participating in the next Relay for Life, April 18th."
