Maureen Longo graduated from UD in 2007, but she still comes back to see the Celebration of the Arts, the annual kickoff event for the Stander Symposium.

The Schuster Center will host Celebration of the Arts, a variety of artistic entertainment, starting at 8 p.m. April 15.

Longo is a graduate student at Wright State University, who earned her undergrad at UD. A lot of her fond memories come from Celebration of the Arts. Longo spent a lot of time practicing music in order to be part of the event.

"I have performed with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Dayton Jazz Ensemble in the past at the Celebration of the Arts, and have always had a wonderful time being involved," Longo said.

Though Longo isn't part of the on-stage action, she doesn't mind.

"This year, instead of being on stage, I'll be an audience member, and I can't wait to experience all of the artistic performances that UD has to offer," Longo said. "One of my favorite parts has always been the presentation of the visual arts."

Coordinator of Celebration of the Arts, Andrea Wade, said no one can get into the Schuster Center without a ticket, but the shows are free.

"Admission is free and tickets are available through Kennedy Union Box Office," Longo said. "Also free transportation to the Schuster will be provided by the Greater Dayton RTA. Round-trip charter buses will depart from the corner of Stewart and Alberta at 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 15."

The event is filled with demonstrations, student films,

student art and design. The celebration will feature perform-ances by the Noble Carneys, Ebony

Heritage Singers, Dayton Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, Chorale, and more according to the Facebook group about the upcoming event.

The closing reception for the symposium will be the department of visual arts' annual Horvath Exhibition 5 to 7 p.m. April 16 at the Rike Center. The juried exhibition highlights student artwork and is on display through April 22.

Longo said it will be different to not be in the Celebration of the Arts because of the time she has dedicated to it. She strongly encourages UD students, faculty and staff to take advantage of the events coming up.

The Celebration of the Arts is filled with diversity, Longo said, and the diversity in art is very positive and inspiring.

"I hope everybody at UD has a chance to witness this diverse celebration, as I'm sure performers and audience members will leave the performance feeling inspired."
