Celebrate Valentine's Day by seeing one of the the Dayton Ballet's most romantic productions: "Dracula" at University Night at 8 p.m. tonight at the Victoria Theatre.
Students can purchase tickets for the reduced price of $15 and can attend a free pre-ballet reception at Boston Stoker near the Victoria Theatre.
"We still have tickets available even though it's one of our more popular shows," said Kathy Reed, executive assistant for the Dayton Ballet. "We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of [the ballet's] career."
This rendition of "Dracula" is a story of romance and sacrifice as Dracula falls in love, Reed said.
"There is a real tendency to exploit splatter and gore," said Dermot Burke, the production's director. "You won't see a drop of blood in this performance. A lot of what you as a viewer are going to do is imagine things in your head."
Burke said he wants to help the audience see things they don't normally see in their lives.
"The mission of most performing arts groups deal with three facts: education, inspiration and entertainment," he said. "People see something that makes them feel good about themselves, and I think [that's] important."
The idea behind University Night came from Culture Works, an organization that works to make art events in Dayton less expensive for the area's college students, said Claire Nerl, the director of marketing and programs for Culture Works.
"They [students] should definitely come down and see this," Nerl said. "It gives students a chance to see downtown in a good light."
Tickets for tonight's show can be purchased online at daytonballet.org, at the KU box office or at the door if they are still available.
"These are world class athletes," Burke said. "They do things that defy gravity. What you see right in front of your eyes is some of the most beautiful and extremely athletic performers in the world."
