Famous violinist joins university orchestra for performance

The University Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble composed of both music majors and non-music majors, will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 22 in Kennedy Union's Boll Theater.

The members of the orchestra are chosen each year through an audition process. This year, it is composed of around 50 members.

"It's a really good opportunity for the students who want to keep playing," said Quentin Marsh, a violinist in the orchestra. "It's a really good ensemble because there is such diversity in concentration. It's a really rewarding experience as a music major to be able to play with such players."

The music that the University Symphony Orchestra is performing for the concert is difficult, according to Dr. Jiang Liu, the orchestra's conductor.

"The program is very hard for any university concert orchestra, and the students have done a really good job," Liu said.

The orchestra will perform two pieces on Thursday - Johannes Brahms' "Violin Concerto in D Major" and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. Four."

"We got all the music for the semester in January," Marsh said, "But we've really been working on [the music for this concert] since February."

Joining the students on the stage Thursday is internationally famous violinist Bin Huang. Huang has played with a variety of ensembles such as the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Chamber Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Thursday's concert is not the first time Huang has played with the University Symphony Orchestra; she also played with the Orchestra two years ago.

"We're really lucky to play with her," Marsh said.
