Creighton at Dayton: First Half
November 14, 2009
In the first 20 minutes of its regular season, the Dayton Flyers basketball team has not come out quite as expected. The defense has been questionable and Creighton has proved to be a worthy adversary to open the season. Dayton has had to deal with foul trouble and poor 3-point shooting but they are still in the game down 5, 46-41.
A fast-paced first half started off very promising for Dayton with a dunk from Devin Searcy and a then a reverse layup by Chris Wright. The Flyers jumped out to 4-0 lead in about 30 seconds.
Creighton, a very solid team in their own right, was not about to go away early. They weathered the storm and were able to take the lead behind good shooting and guard play. P'Allen Stinnett and Cavel Witter dribbled around and through the Dayton defense and kept them on their heels the entire half.
Dayton fell behind by as many as ten at 35-25, but was able to get it back into single digits and keep it that way. With one minute left Luke Fabrizius hit a three to bring the deficit to just 5. The teams exchanged baskets and went into the half with the same point difference.
Two stats stood out from the first half: fouls and 3-pointers. Searcy had three fouls and Kurt Huelsman and Josh Benson had two apiece to thin out Dayton's front line considerably. Both of Dayton's point guards, London Warren and Mickey Perry, also had two fouls. As a result, Creighton got to the foul line much more than Dayton. UD went 5-6, but Creighton went 12-16. Eliminating that difference would leave the Flyers with a 2 point lead.
UD struggled from the 3-point line, going just 4-15. The shooting will have to get better and there will have to be less attempts in the second half if the Flyers are to come back and win this game.
