Towson at Dayton: First Half
November 28, 2009
At this time of the year, we think about what we are thankful for.
The Flyer faithful (including this writer) are thankful to have their team back in town.
After their trip to Puerto Rico did not go exactly as planned, the Flyers are probably thankful to be home as well, and playing in a more familiar territory.
It it didn't look much better for the Flyers however in the first half of their game against Towson from the Colonial Athletic Association. Dayton has continued to have trouble in some key areas of the game and Towson has shot it well to have the lead 42-33.
On the strength of 20 points from guard Josh Thornton and some lights-out three point shooting, the Tigers have come in and silenced the crowd at UD Arena.
Dayton came out of the gate aggressive, with a dunk from Chris Wright to open the game and some full court defense. With more aggressive play attacking the basket, Dayton was able to open up an early 8-2 advantage.
Towson was able to get back into the game and take the lead on the strength of some excellent shooting, especially from 3-point range. The Tigers hit on four of their first five attempts.
Chris Wright showed off his star power and kept Dayton in the game scoring 11 of UD's first 18 points and relentlessly taking it to the hole.
Down 19-15, Dayton strung together a 10-0 run on the Tigers by running the fast break to perfection. Guard Troy Franklin put a stop to the run with about 7:30 left to make it 25-21.
The Tigers retook the lead three straight threes by Thornton. With a Kurt Huelsman layup in the middle, the score was 32-27.
Thornton buried yet another 3-pointer but Devin Searcy answered with a layup-and-one to keep Dayton close.
Thornton hit his sixth three of the half with 30 seconds left to cap the scoring for the first 20 minutes.
Dayton is still showing problems turning the ball over and on the defensive end, giving up another 40-point half and over 50 percent shooting for the Tigers.
For the Flyers to come back in this one, it will require the offense to come from more sources than just Chris Wright, who finished the half with 13 points. Josh Thornton cooling down couldn't hurt either.
