Orchestral pop-rockers Art Decade will play at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District Thursday, June 12. The show is part of its tour promoting its new self-titled album, which is available on iTunes.

Art Decade’s sophomore album is particularly special to the band, because the members created the entire project on their own with very little outside help.

“It was a massive undertaking,” said vocalist, guitarist and arranger Ben Talmi. “It was a grand ambition on a DIY budget and I think the sound of the record reflects that – massive and huge, but also organic and real.”

Talmi assembled a 15-piece orchestra for the album to help achieve the sound that he described as “neo-indie classical, symphonic post-pop and rock.”

Talmi grew up around classical music – his father was a composer and his mother was a ballerina – and this is why his music is still so influenced by classical and orchestral sounds.

“Naturally I kind of rebelled – I found rock ‘n’ roll and became obsessed with that. Growing up I had desire to combine those kinds of things,” Talmi said, naming the Beatles and David Bowie as some of his biggest influences.

Talmi said their shows have been getting much looser, because they’ve played a lot of events since the album was released in February.

“It’s interesting to hear where the songs are at now since when we released them,” he said. “The band is really tight because of all the touring we’ve been doing together, and we’re more comfortable to be freer with our parts live.”

Art Decade will be performing alongside Bent Knee, Speaking Suns and the Dayton-based Smug Brothers. The show begins at 9:30 p.m. at Blind Bob’s in the Oregon District. For more information, call 937-938-6405.
